DRAFT IN PROGRESS THREAD ... What's past is preamble

You wanted the Braves to pay him more than they had to? They're not blind, just because they rated him up there doesn't mean they don't know others don't. So you take advantage of that and pay him less than you have to.

I believe they are paying him the slot range he likely would of fallen to if the Braves didn't draft him. Him and his agent knew this so that's why they had a deal cut earlier in the day. Again this was about playing the slot game and not getting BPA. It's so obvious.

OK, I'll play.

As opposed to "Whatever the Braves do is self-evidently correct and according to plan, and our talent evaluators are not subject to question."

I have no issue with differing opinions. I don't know how many times I have to say that.

I do have an issue with people who use baseball writer draft rankings as gospel and suggest there is such a thing as a reach or guarantee in the MLB draft.

BTW, I'm not sold on Anderson. I have stated many times I wanted either Lewis or Groome. Of course part of me is worried and hoping like crazy that I was wrong initially. I'm not singing our praises or assuming we nailed it. I'm just saying that jumping off the bridge at this point is so stupid.

Agreed. I would've much preferred a bat, but I'll trust the FO and see how the draft plays out

This is it exactly. It's the only thing that makes sense. If there was any real discussion of Anderson being the top pitcher in this draft is there any chance his agent lets him go under slot that much?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but here are the major rankings for Ian Anderson: ESPN / Law: 7, BBA: 12, MLB: 13.

You can be BPA on a team's board and still get an under slot deal based on where you would go if not taken by that team. Again, you're assuming 'BPA' is based on some kind of industry consensus.

You just contradicted yourself in consecutive posts. You know the Braves told him he was their top pitcher, yet you seem to suggest it would be impossible to then pay him less money once you've admitted that. We obviously paid him less money, so...

What the Braves FO tells the public after the fact doesn't mean much to me. And let's not act like Gammons knows anything at this stage. The whole thing if a fluff piece to prop up everyone.

I think Rutherford was the guy the Braves hoped would drop. I think they had a couple backup options and I think those are all gone now. I bet the Braves draft team all has a dead look in their eyes at this point.

If you have 2 players you really like but one wants slot money and one wants 3 million less than slot then its not a hard decision. The Braves might have liked another player but if they view them about equal then taking the one that saves slot money is a no brainer.

You're assuming the worst. I'm going to assume the best.

To each his own.

And you're the one who admitted the Braves likely did tell Anderson he was the top pitcher on their board.

So he's BPA because the Braves told Gammons he was? And we believe that?

Yep, when was the last time the Braves didn't get the player they said they had ranked at the top of their board?

I think the guys the Braves were targeting are still both on the board and the entire draft room is skipping around butt naked in sheer delight.

Smoltz said that's he's the best pitcher in this draft. He even gave him a deGrom comparison.

Yea and he and others have gave all these kids impressive comps, Smoltz is just doing his job and hoping for the best for these talented kids. He isn't going to focus on their weaknesses in this format though.

Really? I know I'm sitting here with my fingers crossed, but I have three names in front of me that could easily fall to 40/44 that would make for a much better scenario. But I again stress about Pick 39....
