The Don

We're gonna miss this guy. Hillary should make him Ambassador to Mexico.

This is what it's come to in 2016:

The day after the worst shooting in American history, the Republicans' presidential candidate suggested Obama might be a terrorist sympathizer.

.......

Interested to see how the convention plays out

Just to be absolutely clear here: you think McCain wins with a different VP candidate?

I think it's close.

Imo he likely wins FL, NC, and VA with a bland 60 year old white guy as a running mate. That's a 110 point swing in the election. Not enough to win, but it makes it substantially closer.

It's been 8 years so you'll forgive me if I don't recall all the details of the election, but I always thought Rudy G. made a much stronger nomination. Not only did he have the name recognition, but there is a good chance, imo, a McCain/Rudy ticket pulls NY with a possibility of NJ as well. That would have been enough to secure the election.

Palin generated a ton of positivity for his campaign.

And class.

And snow-machine ability.

Carp, I get what you're saying, but I think the cards were simply stacked against McCain in 2008. I think he mishandled a few things during the bailout debate and allowed Obama to look decisive. The other thing to remember is that Obama's ground game was simply spectacular. Things could have broken right for McCain if bin Laden had been apprehended or something on that order, but he started from behind given W's standing and he just couldn't mount the effort to make up the macro-distance in the public's sentiments or the micro-distance vis-a-vis Obama.

Again not saying it changes the outcome. I agree with many of your points. But the very least I think if you sub out Palin for a better running mate, then he pulls VA, NC, and FL. Those 3 states alone wouldn't have won the election for McCain, but it would be a 110 point swing, which would have made the election very close.

wants to be Commander in Chief and lead the war against 'radical islamic terrorism' which in his words threatens to destroy the country.

can't handle questions from a reporter.

Will Trump have any problem finding a respectable running mate? Would a serious politician attach himself to his sinking ship?

Even as toxic as Trump is, I'm sure there are plenty of attention seeking right-wing ladder climbers out there: Joe the Plumber, Karl the Klansman, Carmine the Enforcer, etc.

I think Gingrich would take the spot in an instant. LePage, the Governor of Maine, would likely do so as well. Of course (he writes sarcastically), I'm still holding out for my old pal Michelle Bachmann. Then the picture I have of when I was sitting next to her while testifying on one of her bills when she was a State Senator in Minnesota might be worth big bucks!

and your post shows what morons the public can be, presidents have about as much to do with the economy as i do with halibut fishing limits.

I agree with your primary point that Presidents have little to do with overall economic performance, but somehow people believe that they do. McCain's performance--or lack thereof--at the informal summit that stitched together the response to the bank crisis made him look weak and indecisive. There were a number of problems with the policies that were developed, but McCain just sat there and looked out of his depth. To me, that really turned the race.

As per the article, we don't know how much Palin brought to the table in turnout from cultural conservatives. If she's not on the ticket, my guess is some of those folks stay home (they certainly weren't voters Obama was going to get). I think it's safe to assume she ended up being a net drag on the Republican ticket, but as weso pointed out, McCain had bigger problems than her.

Trump's unfavorables up to 70% in latest Washington Post-ABC News poll. Clinton up to 55%.

Just pathetic that these are the two major party candidates.

The libertarian ticket has more exectuive experience then both of them... 2 republican governors from blue states.

But you know - wasted votes!
