The Don

So did Palin cause a 100-EV swing, you think?

well, if she HURT him by 2 mill votes, a better VP choice could have helped by 2-4 mill votes and depending on where those votes came from, it could have made a big difference. Instead of losing 53% to 47% now you are looking at a photo finish in the popular voted and a helluva lot closer electoral vote.

The popular vote margin was nearly 10 million.

Ironically Obama won because he's great at reality tv. He also won because he was running at the right time. He certainly didn't win because McCain threw a hail mary at his own one yard line.

Just to be absolutely clear here: you think McCain wins with a different VP candidate?

It's food for thought, if nothing else, but at the point in the election when Johnny Mac chose Palin it was still essentially anybody's game (he enjoyed a 6 point bump after choosing her, briefly edging ahead of Obama before falling again and never recovering). It's possible, if improbable, that the right candidate - perhaps a minority candidate, perhaps a candidate with greater experience - could have stolen some of Obama's thunder and really played up on the inexperience angle or countered the progressive push. I don't know though, looking back, 2008 feels a lot like an inevitability given the domestic sociopolitical currents.

Not a good week for the Donald.

The Problem is that it's just food for thought. IIRC that surge was post RNC Convention when candidates always get a boost.

What did McCain in was the recession coming to a head in September 2008. People associated it with Bush and Bush with him. That was what ultimately did himself in.

With the caveat that national polling is not the best tool, here are the horserace polls from '08. As you can see, it's pretty much all blue until a few days after the convention, where McCain shows a lead (as Zito said, not uncommon) that mostly doesn't get beyond the polls' MoE. Shoot, most of that bump is probably because of the novelty of the Palin pick.

I mean, it's possible that a better pick wouldn't have bled away that support so easily, but I think it's unlikely to have had enough impact to sway the election.

It's hard to win a so-called third term. Winning it in the face of an economic collapse and a protracted and unpopular war—even against an unproven and brown-skinned candidate literally named Hussein—is Herculean. It wasn't going to happen in 08, barring a total collapse from the Democrat. Turns out Obama was a closer.

If memory serves I recall fellow Braves fans feeling clever satisfaction referring to Senator Warren with the same taunt

Same speech:

Trump: "I am the least racist person that you’ve ever looked at..."

Trump on @SenWarren: “Pocahontas is not happy."

She is one of the people with the definition of Crazy Eyes.

And I have seen those eyes close up while in conversation with her. Truly spooky.

I don't know if McCain was hoping for a 100-EV swing with Palin. Probably more of a 100 degree schwing.

PS--Pretty dynamic speech by Warren. She probably wishes she was a bit more circumspect about her ethnicity. Something that will likely haunt her moving forward, but she would have been a darn fine candidate this year.

Reports I see this morning say Sen Warren's ethnicity and the derogatory manner Trump revels in is being addressed at the Romney retreat.
Somehow I get the feeling Romney and his moneyed partners are taking care of "family business" and Trump is Sal Tessio

No reason her ethnicity (or what she claims) amounts to anything. Except providing dog whistles to her racist political foes
Living in the south I quickly learned people are quick to brag on what part Cherokee they are.
I really don't care because I assume 3/4 of them are relying on exaggerated family lore.

I am more concerned with how pols plan on rebuilding the inner cities, repairing lead pipes and decaying bridges.
Protecting women needing mammograms, college debts and
or the height of their walls

This is the "leave the gun take the cannoli" point of the race

So she can use her ethnicity to her advantage but Trump can't call her out on that BS?

Suppose, she said she had Jewish blood. Would calling her kike be acceptable ?

Or Italian and calling her Wop ?

I can't believe this has to be explained.

You're welcome

So Pocahontas is equal to ******, kike and wop?

You didn't answer. If she can play up that she's Indian for her advantage why can't trump call her out for it?

He can call her out. Using derogatory terms is insulting to not Senator Warren but Native Americans as a whole. It insults a child on a reservation some social worker is trying to help assimilate into mainstream culture. Trump as a candidate is just one more thing that kid and his family sees as a deck stacked against them.

So yes, Pocahontas is equal to Kike or Wop
