2016 DRAFT Signing Tracker ... FINAL, JULY 15

It's unacceptable for the Braves not to know this rule going into the situation, but that's also a really dumb rule. If something is severe enough to warrant a team voiding a contract, it's hopelessly dumb that it should still count against the bonus pool.

This. That is an incredibly dumb rule. If you are forced to void the contract, then you should lose that bonus slot money. That seems like the most fair way to do it. So if you sign a guy for over slot and have to void it, you have more for other picks; if you sign a guy for under slot and void it, you have less.

The way it stands, that is pointless.

But this actually makes me feel better about it from the Braves' perspective. Sure, you would like to think they know every rule, but there are undoubtedly an insane number of rules. We probably haven't had this happen before, and experience is probably the way you learn most of the more obscure rules. I mean, how often does any team try to void a contract of a guy they just signed before all the other players have signed?

It was a mistake, but not a huge one to me.

Baseball players don't do predraft physicals like they do in basketball and football. For most of them, they are playing in a summer league or in college during the predraft process. If they have any medical looks, it definitely isn't to the level of the NFL combine where you are poked, prodded, and MRIed to death.

Pretty sure everyone understands that, but that's still an organizational problem - not a league problem. This is just another "look before you leap" situation. I get that point (and 50's), but this still stinks of putting the cart before the horse and a complete lack of control. Unreported medical condition or not, there are still entirely too many people (apparently) that either have or feel like they have the authority to act autonomously - whether it's agreeing to terms with a player without a COMPLETE work-up by team medical personnel or Bridges not realizing he can't void a contract because we figured something out after-the-fact.

There's only one person that will get heat for these things - Coppy. Thing is, if there were ANY questions about whether he had a handle on EVERYTHING, he shouldn't have been handed the reigns. JS and Hart are supposedly looking over his shoulder (and for some unknown reason he has to run every decision by them) and holding his hand. JS is still active on different Rules Committees and Hart's evidently just playing golf since other execs are overseeing business operations and any concerns having to do with the new park.

I realize the rules concerning the draft/international spending/etc. have been in flux, but every organization has to deal with that (not just us), and we seem to be the only one that continually drops the ball. The reason I continue to "defend" Coppy is that he supposedly has a support system available to him to help him deal with all this. Being a GM is a much more overwhelming job than most people around here realize or are willing to give credit for - the GM has to be the "buck stops here" guy. As much as I hate to agree with those who constantly want to beat down the brass, I begrudgingly have to admit it really does appear that no one's in control. Someone needs to step up and take the blame for some of the bumbling when it concerns not knowing the rules - whether it's the draft rules or the Bonifacio promotion situation.

Don't mistake this rant for having no faith in these guys - I've agreed with just about every personnel decision they've made (trades or signings) since Wren was fired and Hart was hired, but that's only a small part of running the situation. There are TONS of people who are pretty awesome fantasy baseball GMs, but those people aren't necessarily good real-life GMs because they have no idea about everything else involved in the operation. JS, Bobby, and Hart have always been really good about deflecting praise in the past when they've shared credit with scouts/player personnel people/etc., but they've all disappeared recently. They said from the day Coppy was "promoted" that he wasn't the "final say", yet he's the only person that's had to comment on anything.

Any word at all on Neslony signing? Ominous that this is continuing to drag on.

He retweeted a link to a story on MiLB.com about Matt Withrow being excited about possibly pitching in the same game as brother Chris someday, but that's the last thing I've noticed. That was Wednesday.

Funny that folks were up in arms about a college senior

It wasn't about being up in arms. I was more worried about how they prioritized their signings. I think they finish all the slot values first then hit your round 10+. No matter what ultimately happened, there was a lot riding on Nelsony.

My guess is there was a solid number with Nelsony from the beginning. He had no leverage and knew it. It just took him a bit longer to get his signature on the paper. The Braves clearly goofed on the "over" offer to either Rowland or Becherer (not on the quality of the players involved, but that they didn't understand that the original agreement stuck and not the adjusted agreement) that caused the Anthony kerfuffle, but I'm pretty sure everything else was set when the guys were picked.

Overall it was a great draft. The Anthony goof was bad but not end of world. I can also understand those who wanted a higher prospect at #3. It is like us getting Maitan and saying I don't care the Padres got the next three top talents. But I am still very happy overall.

surely i'm not the first to ask, so apologies if i've missed the answer...

but what's with drafting guys with the same name two rounds in a row? what really happened? honestly...did they draft the wrong brandon white the first time around and had to turn around and draft the right one the next round? that's the theory i'm going with until proven otherwise.
