Viz and Teheran listed as top trade candidates

Well if teams don't want to cough up value we all agree you hang onto JT and that's fine.

My biggest argument with people is that everyone wants to get a Hershel Walker return or win in a landslide, not only do I find that unrealistic but I don't think it's necessary either.

Just get fair value, and deal from a position where we have greater numbers (pitchers) to fill greater needs (offense). I don't need a landslide win - give me a package around Benetendi and I'm pretty happy.

Make no mistake - I'd obviously love a landslide win too, but you can only trade with Stewart so often.

Im not taking a package around Bene, he's good but if Boston wants him, its Moncada or they can keep running out its same pitchers they have now.

Fair value is only for when you have to trade a player or need to trade a player...we have to do neither of those with Teheran. And that's why we win the trade hands down.

You say that would be fair value. Well Swanson was their #1 prospect that was still an overpay for Miller.

I think the trio of Swanson/Aaron/Inciarte was the huge overpay. Thats over the moon stuff that we shouldnt expect to get with a JT trade.

And thats where we really disagree.

Im fine with fair value, which includes the value of JTs contract btw. Im not ignoring that.

Of course I am in the camp that believes we need to trade him, so thats probably why we disagree.

Fans always overrate their own.

Atlanta fans say they wont trade JT without getting Moncada.
Boston fans say they will throw up if they deal Moncada for a guy having the hottest streak of his career.

I do honestly think the majority of the fans on this board overrate JTs value.

Thing is we dont HAVE to trade him.

I'm not saying we need a teams top 5 prospects but trading him for a decent package is stupid. Agree with others that we have to win the trade.

Keeping him isnt the end of the world either.

Teheran's contract is the main reason some on here would want a haul.

Did u read the DBack fans comments when they heard Swanson was traded? Pretty much the same. Boston hasn't said that Moncada is off limits and has said that they may have to move one of him or Benintendi to get the pitching they need.

And thats a bad thing?

We should give away a top pitcher on one of the most team friendly contracts in baseball?

Please.

Well, I have never said keeping him is the end of the world, and you seem to be insinuating that because I dont need a landslide deal, Im OK with getting mediocrity in return. None of which is true. Theres nothing wrong with a win/win deal, thinking the only way to move JT is to rip somebody off is silly IMO.

I recognize very much the value JT has, thats exactly why I want to deal him, not only do I think its much more likely his value falls somewhat than stays at this level, I also think we have a lot of internal options with arms, we have very little with offense.

For petes sake, show me where I said we should give him away.

You arent even reading what Im writing.

We can absolutely disagree on this and it looks like we do, but I have never said we should just give him away.

The fact of the matter is he is not Jose Fernandez (or some other ace( , if the Red Sox want to put together the type of package people on this board want them to... they are going to aim higher than Julio.

Jose Fernandez yes, but it would cost them Moncada, Bene, Swihart, Devers, Espinosa or so for him.

Given what they wanted from LA last winter.

Well maybe not give away, my bad, but im not trading him for a good/decent package with maybe one really good prospect.

Different views i guess.

I am rating his value the same way I would rate ANY player's value, past performance, age contract years and cost and coming up with an expected excess value range then using the expected value of prospects to formulate what constitutes "fair value" and above

Ken rosenthal had a sox article today that said the industry does not consider Tehran an impact player worth giving up one of their top 3 bats.

Sox won't look like zona.

That is why a six trade needs to be a blockbuster and likely a 3 team deal.

For those talking up the contract I think that matters less to a team like Boston. Still matters. But if we want total contract value we prob need to deal him to anyone other than sox yanks dodgers white sox tigers blue jays rangers

Maybe we can start by defining terms. What's "fair value" for Teheran? Earlier in the thread I threw out a top 75 overall prospect, a minor league reliever with great numbers while being too old for the league and a C-level prospect with some toolsy upside as my sense of "fair value" for Teheran. Does that seem broadly accurate to most folks?

I wouldn't trade Teheran for pretty much just a 70ish prospect

nope, too thin. Fair value is someone expected to provide $70m in excess value which is a top 10 in all of baseball prospect. for us to move him, I would expect that + another guy.

Other teams can say what they want, then they won't get him and will have to settle for paying 60-70% of that for a rental. their problem
