International Signing Day: Results, Rumors, Spec

It will be interesting to see where Severino ends up next season. The Braves have been aggressive with international signees over the past few years with quite a few of them leap-frogging the DSL and ending up in the GCL their first year.

I wonder if they'll keep Severino in the DSL next year so that both can play SS every day.

True, but I wonder if they move Maitan to a different position sooner rather than later. Livan Soto is also a SS and we can't forget the Morales kid they signed last summer (and who is scuffling a bit in the DSL). Lots of options. I guess it's important to remember that good younger players usually play a position like SS given its importance on the field. Nice dilemma to have with all these guys.

I would assume they'll let Maitan play SS until he gives them a reason not to. If he proves he can stick at SS, it provides us some flexibility in 3-4 years when we would potentially have to decide what to do with our assets. For at least the next year or two we won't even know if we have a capable starting SS in the system, so it wouldn't make sense to me to limit one of our highest ceiling options at the position.

My guess is Maitan stays at short at least through AA or AAA. Severino gets moved to second fairly soon. Pena moves to third fairly soon. Soto sticks at short but plays a level lower than Maitan so both have a chance to advance through the system as shortstops.

By the middle of 2017 our infields (third, short, and second) might look like this:

Majors: Prado, Swanson, Albies

AAA: Ruiz, Castro, Brignac

AA: Franco, Camargo, Obregon

High A: Riley, Salazar, Dykstra

Low A: Yepez, Cruz, Gonzalez

GCL: Pena, Maitan, Severino

Everything I've read suggests that Severino plays "bat" and where he plays will be a secondary concern. I think they will handle Maitan similarly to how they handled Betemit. SS until otherwise merited either through performance or need.

Think Riley will be in the bigs and I don't think we sign Prado again.

Ben Badler said today that Yefri Del Rosario hasn't signed yet, but his current guess is Atlanta when he does sign.

We did great, and there's 28 MLB who are probably jealous of what we were able to do on the international market, but I still feel somewhat let down. Just me being greedy.

Wish we could have landed a few more 2-25 type guys and would have pounced on one of the Red Sox holdovers. I wonder if we hit a bit of a spending limit.

The Red Sox signings aren't really guys who are going to move the needle.

I agree on wishing we could have landed more guys in the top 10. This is a case where we probably just have to trust our scouts. We definitely spent as though we got multiple top 10 guys, the rankings just didn't line up. We seem to still be far higher on Gutierrez than most.

From afar, it seems like we felt the two top bats a year ago were going to be Maitan and Guiterrez and we moved on them aggressively and locked them in at high prices assuming they would stay that way. It appears Maitan kept his ranking and Guitierrez fell a little bit.

I certainly applaud the aggressiveness and we spent big, but after hearing about this international cycle for a long time, it seems like we didn't go quite as big as planned.

Still a great haul.

The Braves aren't really a quick twitch franchise. When something happens like that, they usually aren't quick on the ball to capitalize. Just their MO..
