The Reverse Pennant Chase

Twins continue their free fall, losing their 12th in a row tonight and pulling even with us. We do however own the tiebreaker over them.

I'll take #2 overall pick if it comes from the Braves having a great last month to the season. Finish strong going into next year. Theres plenty of top talent in the upcoming draft.

I don't think anyone can complain about that (or shouldn't anyway) if we are being led to wins by young players performing well. If guys like Ender, Freddie, Wisler, Folty, Cabrera, Swanson, etc that are here for the long term are leading the charge for the 2nd pick then that's fantastic.

Is it possible to be bad enough to get both #1 and #2?

If a team has the #1 pick and fails to sign them they get the #2 pick the next year as compensation. If they such bad enough to get the #1 pick again they would have the top 2. The Astros almost did this a few years ago.

Oh they will complain like it's the most incompetent thing in the history of incompetence.

I just love the fact that we are so unlucky to loose 100 games and not get the #1 pick. Most years no one would be that close to us.

Twins have totally collapsed. Hard to know what their September will look like. All their top prospects are on the 25-man right now. Of course, the Twins do stupid stuff like bring up Logan Schafer and actually give him ABs. I can't believe Molitor is safe.

There will be a lot of great players in the draft, so I'm not worried about where we'll end up (likely in the top 2), but there are a few teams in striking distance of passing the Braves in the quest for the gold or silver. San Diego and Tampa Bay are the dark horses here and don't count out the Reds.

For me it is not really the player loss right now. It is the pool money. That #1 has a huge bonus pool difference that you can really exploit in the later rounds.

Good point. Didn't think of that angle.

yeah, that #1 could increase your pool spending by almost 2 million for the entire draft. That is a lot of $$. I still think Coppi will go aggressively after a comp pick again next year. Especially since he can't do much internationally.

An extra $2 million would certainly give them a lot more flexibility to go high in later rounds. No question about that. I agree on the comp pick angle. We have a lot of bodies we could move for a comp pick, which would both free up 40-man roster space and get an extra pick.

Are we sure the draft will work this way next year? Isn't the CBA being re-negotiated this upcoming off-season?
