If we bring in 2 SP what do they do with prospects

Saw tigers need to cut about 30 mil in payroll. I'd take Justin Verlander-28 per for 3 years. I'd eat Anibal Sanchez's contract(16 for 1 year) to lessen prospect haul.

Yeah, that'll happen. I would be ECSTATIC to get Verlander.

Verlander, Teheran, Santana, Folty, Wisler is a damn good rotation.

You would add $44 million in payroll, in addition to potentially giving up some talent, to add one good pitcher (who has himself been bad recently) and one terrible one?

I'd take a Santana over Sanchez. And if Verlander could be had for around 25 per for 3 years I'd probably do it.

I think Santana will be a valuable trade chip for the Twins this off-season. I would be surprised if we didn't have to part with a premium prospect to get him. This is partly why I would rather go after free agent starters without a QO. I don't dispute for example that Santana is better than Cashner. But when you take into account price, I suspect Casher will be the preferable alternative.

That would show that they mean business.

We'll soon see how serious they are about contention in 2017. Part of me thinks that it's another ruse for the new ballpark. Here's my reasoning. Before they went into full rebuild mode, they denied that they were going to do it. Lo and behold, the most valuable assets (save Teheran and Freeman) were jettisoned. The point is not to question the need for rebuild (it should've been done years before) or the return (some very good, some knocks to remove bad contracts).

They're essentially pinning the blame on the status of Folty's and Wisler's on McDowell. It's also possible that they're just not experienced enough. If Coppy stays true to his word, while working to obtain staff ace and #3 starter, then the point becomes moot. Folty and Wisler automatically become more effective with less pressure by become 4th and 5th in the rotation. However, there's always the possibility of obtaining the 2 starters, but both being #3-4 types. They can always say, "we didn't want to sacrifice the assets needed to acquire a TOR starter..."

So, 2017 could end up with good feelings from the new digs and the associated amenities surrounding it. The players get their guy in Snitker, still essentially interim manager with only one year guaranteed, the team plays .500 ball and some of the better prospects are afforded a full year of seasoning.

Hope to be wrong in this instance, because a turnaround of this magnitude (bottom feeders to potentially wild card) within the span of < 1 year is remote. Yes, it's been done, but teams that battled back from extensive injuries or cellar dwellers who were more advantaged in their rebuidling phases (i.e. '91 Braves).

C'mon Coppy, show us what you're made of. Get us Verlander and Sale and not wipe out the farm system and we'll talk again in April.

I hope you're right. I don't want to shortcut the rebuild for the sake of competing in 2017. Tat would be a disaster, IMO.

haha it would seriously be a horrible move, but at least our rotation is sexy? Sale, Verlander, Teheran, Folty, Wisler is a top 2-3 rotation hahah

Verlander had a Cy Young type of year this year, what the hell.

His worst year was in 2014, but hes fine otherwise.

I disagree.. but like I said early last week.. we will see how JT performs in the playoffs next year.. I think he will be lights out.

He may have helped, but their offense let them down.

Next year they'll have Price, Porcello, Pomeranz, Rodriguez, and Bucholtz assuming they pick the option up, and Wright as well.

Saying he's been bad recently was admittedly an over exaggeration, and the more I look at his numbers, the more I realize he has been really good consistently, but he's definitely also a step behind where he was in his prime. He's now basically established himself as about a 3.5 FIP guy, and I'm not going to bank on him continuing that as he hits 34+.

He just barely missed his best strikeout rate year (10.04 per 9 as opposed to his season best in 2009... his walk rate was also well below his career average... Not sure if you're giving him enough credit.

The Tigers situation is interesting. If they really want to jettison payroll I would love to do a deal like the Dodgers/Red Sox salary dump years ago. We could take Verlander, Sanchez, Maybin, Kinsler, and Justin Upton for Markakis, Mallex, and some prospects. I think our payroll is higher than people think. Probably could go up to 160 in the first year of the new stadium. Takes care of virtually every need. 2 SP. Both I think will be better in the NL. Upton brings another 30 HR bat. Kinsler could play 3B and is a good top of the order hitter. Maybin would be a very god 4th outfielder. I think we would be set for years. As contracts run out we should have prospects to replace them. It would still leave us in good position for the 2018 free agent class which could have some elite players. Sanchez, Maybin, and Kinsler would all be gone. Verlander only 1 year left and Upton 3 years left.

That would be amazing....if tigers would do it and if we didn't have to give up much on prospects.

If we get jup I'd love to dump kemp but that will never happen.

He had a really good year, but his HR rate was up. Maybe an aberration, but his K rate may have been as well.

I just don't know if I want to be paying him close to 30 per for his 35-37 year old years when he's already shown some signs of slowing down.

After all this time, there still some who just don't want to let this die.
