Arizona Fall League Game Thread

It would go directly against everything Coppy has said.

No doubt. However, Coppy's learning - and doing a much better job of playing things a bit closer to the vest of late too.

While I'm with Oklahomabrave in his feeling that they want to make a splash, I'm not sure they will. If you could trade from part of this depth to add substantial pieces (that are under control for several more years - Sale/Archer/Quintana/Longoria types) to the team that ended 2016 on a tear - without going completely nuts and trading too many of them - I'm not so sure I'd be able to keep from trying to open the new digs with a HUGE bang if I were in his shoes.

Most of the things Coppy has come out and said have been true in hindsight. If he says we're not going to be looking to unload our prospect talent, then I have no reason to think he's going to turn around and do it. Nothing he has done to this point leads me to believe that is much of an option.

That's why I agreed with Oklahomabrave's use of "want to" as opposed to "plan to". I do think that if the right deal dropped into their laps for one of those players (read - one that wouldn't cause them to have to back up the truck), Coppy would pull the trigger. Thing is, (as many mention) the chances of the right deal happening are slim. I do think that Coppy will be extremely aggressive if he happens to find a quantity over quality deal though.

Game of Thursday, October 27

Scottsdale 9, Salt River 7

SP: Ellis 2.2 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 0 K, HR, pickoff (7.27)
Phillips 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K (4.05)

Demeritte 2-4, 2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, K (.280)

Tebow 1-4, R, SB, 3 K (.125)

now a 3 run bomb.. Ellis getting shelled.. some hard hit balls in the 3rd... his ball is cutting a ton though.. he can't control it.

Ellis did not look good but it was hard to tell not really watching him much before. Almost looked like he couldn't get used to the dessert heat. A lot of pitches riding up and in to righties and away from lefties. Th ball was riding the hot air off the bat. I was not surprised by the high scores.

Demerite looked good at second. I went to bed before he started hitting but I like his look. Not quite as big as I thought. But a nice package of speed defense and power. He was an absolute steal.

How has Demeritte been doing in the K department?

You are 100% correct. Folks wishing for the Braves to acquire an impact SP haven't been paying attention to the Braves the last 3 years, and/or have completely unrealistic expectations of what guys like Archer, Sale and Quintana are worth on the trade market.

However, I still contend that if 2 of Newcomb, Blair and Wisler had proven they were ready to help Teheran and Folty anchor the rotation in 2017, we would have seen a couple major moves by the Braves this offseason. I'm talking Ces in LF and a significant trade kind of big moves that would have positioned the team for 85+ wins and true playoff contention. Unfortunately, the lack of progression by those pitchers made it impossible for the Braves to truly contend in 2017, so we got Kemp in LF and hopes of a 75-80 win team as a consolation prize instead.

K-rate is down considerably from regular season. 14 Ks in 56 PAs. 5 BBs. He's been over 30% K-rate most of his minor league career so while he's still K-ing at 25%, it's improved in Arizona.

Players can succeed with a 23% K rate. Let's hope these are improvements he can carry over to AA next year.

I don't think we can really use at 56 PA sample as evidence that his approach has improved.
