2016-2017 Off-Season Thread

Pretty sure this means that Lien and Mike Peterson (both also drafted in 2012) are exposed, but I don't know who else.

Lien strikes me as a guy who won't get selected in the Rule 5 draft but could actually contribute to a ML team if things were to click for him. I think he's not far off right now from being a passable 4th OF.

Rob Wooten (DWL) - 5.1 scoreless IP, 3 hits, 5 Ks, 2 BBs - 2.49 ERA overall
Joel De La Cruz (DWL) - .2 IP, 1 hit - 1.93 ERA overall
Steve Kent (ABL) - 2 IP, 2 Ks - 3.48 ERA overall
Enderson Franco (VWL) - 1 IP, 1 BB - 2.70 ERA overall

Ronald Acuna (ABL) - 1/4, SB - .364, 3 SBs overall
Matt Kennelly (ABL) - 2/5, 2 RBI, 2 runs - .375 overall
Carlos Franco (DWL) - 1/4, RBI - .261 overall
Joey Meneses (MPL) - 0/4 - .333 overall
Ronnier Mustelier (MPL) - 0/3, RBI - .336 overall

Adonis Garcia (VWL) - 1/3 (2B), 1 run - .167 overall

Do we think this makes these guys more or less likely to be traded? Or does it not mean anything at all?

Just a guess, but I don't really think anything can be gleaned from it. Don't really understand the addition of Gosewich - almost as confusing as signing Bonifacio and Beckham to MLB deals early on last winter.

The other three HAD to be added - whether they're being floated or not - can't see any way they'd have survived the Rule V personally.

Me looking at Rob Wooten's success:

"Meh, winter league stats mean nothing."

Me looking at Acuna's success 5 seconds later:

"ALL ABOARD THE HYPE TRAIN! CHOO CHOO!"

I don't think it really has to be one or the other. Undoubtedly the Sox are asking for Swanson or Maitan because it would be foolish not to. But there's pretty much no way the Braves deal either of them. If that means no Sale, then no Sale. But I'd venture that the price would go down the longer discussions go on.

In any negotiation, obviously start by asking for more than you think you can get. Makes you wonder what the Braves asked for intially to get Shelby before "settling"!

Right now, it seems that the Braves are most active in their pursuit. If that Nats saw that as some potential threat, then they might consider getting more involved to prevent the Braves from getting Sale or to drive up the asking price. Think you're absolutely right about the potential outcome with longer discussions.

Pollock.

There's a chance that we found out the price is too high. There's a chance we thought guys like Wisler/Blair had more trade value than we thought. There's a chance we had follow up trades for guys like Kemp/Markakis that seem less likely. There's a chance Hart is full of hot air and is using the media to drive interest down to drive demand down. Who really knows?

Wonder if Alex Avila could be a potential fallback from Castro? Solid numbers against righties. Anyone have time to dig up framing/defensive info?

I keep going back to Miguel Montero. I think he can be a good fit.
switch hitter, but better as a lefty
good veteran presence
signed for one more year at 14 M
had a down season and might could be had inexpensively with that contract

I also really like the idea of Jorge Soler. I'd like to get those two in a package deal

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the Braves are still in the mix for free agent backstop Jason Castro.
The Rays seem to the the club that is pushing hardest to sign the 29-year-old, though he reportedly has multiple offers on the table. Castro hit just .232/.309/.390 with 11 homers and 32 RBI in 376 plate appearances in 2016.
