Braves acquire garcia

I have our payroll now at $115m with a few spots still open (C and a couple bench spots). I have our WAR projection at 80 assuming we go with basically what we have now.

Interesting how the front office has built a competitive bridge to the future without sacrificing any of it. Everyday we will have a good pitcher and therefore have a good chance to win 80+ games.

I was contemplating packages that made sense. At no point did I think, or declare, there was more than a 0% chance it happened.

Just because it didn't or may never happen doesn't make your statement of 0% chance accurate though.

I like Gant a decent amount but I get the upside of this deal.

If Garcia pitches well, he's a guy that could be flipped pretty easily at the deadline or extended after the season.

It's not a steal because Garcia comes with risk, but I don't think it's hard to see how this would turn out well for the Braves.

This is the first move we've made this offseason that I don't like.

I don't think any of the three prospects are all that good, but I don't like the idea of giving up what could be somewhat useful pieces for an injury prone starter with only one year of control left.

I actually liked gant as a potential fastball-change up guy out of the pen with his K numbers. I know bullpen guys aren't that valuable, but how valuable is one year of an injury-prone starter in a year we aren't going to compete anyway?

I also see this as them admitting the Simmons deal was bad. If this is all Chris Ellis is worth, we should've gotten way more in return for Simmons.

Why would this be us admitting anything about the Simmons deal? Ellis has about as much value as he had then. That was essentially a straight-up trade, and everybody knew it at the time as well.

Why would you contemplate packages that make sense if you thought there was a 0% chance of it happening?

Upgrading from Wisler to Garcia is a 1-2 win improvement. Probably increased their expected wins from just under 75 to right about 75.

Because the packages being thrown around by the brain trust on these boards were wildly less valuable than Sale or Archer. I think folks should spend less time trying to argue silly points like this with me, and more time educating themselves about player valuation.

Agreed. While the 3 guys they gave up likely won't have much (if at all) MLB impact, the Braves used what little trade value they did have to get a pitcher who is very injury prone, and is making $12M. The Cards weren't even a lock to pick up his option when the offseason started, yet they turned him into 3 warm bodies. Gant has a non-zero chance to contribute out of the BP, and the Cards turn prospects like Dykstra into MLB contributors seemingly every season.

Nice move by the Cards, imo.

They turn guys who OPS under .700 in A ball at 21 into contributors with regularity?

Regardless of your thoughts on the deal, it's pretty impressive that we traded 3 guys not in our top 20 prospects and can legitimately discuss whether it's too much to give up.

Our system is deeeeeep.

What other team in majors could trade 3 prospects in the 21-40 range and get a pitcher the caliber of Garcia?

Dude, we aren't competitive at all. Our geriatric starting staff may not total 10 WAR.

Agreed. All guys given up were spare parts.

It's important to note that a lot of the "depth" this system is known for has been converted into other very risky assets though. Regardless of how much depth the Braves had, or what the trade value of that depth is/was, it is debatable whether or not a lottery ticket bat and an injury prone SP with 1 year of control was the best use of that value.

Maybe we define competive differently. We won't touch the Nats and Mets but I think we wI'll have a chance at the second wild card come September first. Meaning that we will be within 5 games of that spot.

Not a bad deal when you consider we have to purge guys out of the system. Maybe Garcia hits lightning in a bottle for 3 months before his arm blows up and we can spin him for something that makes sense.

Would you agree that if Garcia pitches to his ability the braves can flip him for a better asset?

How did we make up 20+ wins?

Here's how I get to 80. This factors in some of our above replacement level depth that we'll have in AAA that could mitigate our injury risk a bit. I find the FG projections that show us in the low to mid 70s noticably low on several spots.
