Oh shut up.... even you were starting to give out possible Sale packages excitedly when the smoke was dense
I was contemplating packages that made sense. At no point did I think, or declare, there was more than a 0% chance it happened.
This is the first move we've made this offseason that I don't like.
I don't think any of the three prospects are all that good, but I don't like the idea of giving up what could be somewhat useful pieces for an injury prone starter with only one year of control left.
I actually liked gant as a potential fastball-change up guy out of the pen with his K numbers. I know bullpen guys aren't that valuable, but how valuable is one year of an injury-prone starter in a year we aren't going to compete anyway?
I also see this as them admitting the Simmons deal was bad. If this is all Chris Ellis is worth, we should've gotten way more in return for Simmons.

I have our payroll now at $115m with a few spots still open (C and a couple bench spots). I have our WAR projection at 80 assuming we go with basically what we have now.
Why would you contemplate packages that make sense if you thought there was a 0% chance of it happening?
Agreed. While the 3 guys they gave up likely won't have much (if at all) MLB impact, the Braves used what little trade value they did have to get a pitcher who is very injury prone, and is making $12M. The Cards weren't even a lock to pick up his option when the offseason started, yet they turned him into 3 warm bodies. Gant has a non-zero chance to contribute out of the BP, and the Cards turn prospects like Dykstra into MLB contributors seemingly every season.
Nice move by the Cards, imo.
Regardless of your thoughts on the deal, it's pretty impressive that we traded 3 guys not in our top 20 prospects and can legitimately discuss whether it's too much to give up.
Our system is deeeeeep.
Interesting how the front office has built a competitive bridge to the future without sacrificing any of it. Everyday we will have a good pitcher and therefore have a good chance to win 80+ games.

Dude, we aren't competitive at all. Our geriatric starting staff may not total 10 WAR.
Agreed. All guys given up were spare parts.
It's important to note that a lot of the "depth" this system is known for has been converted into other very risky assets though. Regardless of how much depth the Braves had, or what the trade value of that depth is/was, it is debatable whether or not a lottery ticket bat and an injury prone SP with 1 year of control was the best use of that value.
Maybe we define competive differently. We won't touch the Nats and Mets but I think we wI'll have a chance at the second wild card come September first. Meaning that we will be within 5 games of that spot.
How did we make up 20+ wins?
Upgrading from Wisler to Garcia is a 1-2 win improvement. Probably increased their expected wins from just under 75 to right about 75.
