Around MLB 2017

Braves track record with pitching has been pretty bad in terms of development. Hernandez isn't off to a good start with the Julio collapse

What really good pitchers besides Wood haven't done well here (not that Wood didn't do well here, but he's flourished in LA)? I'd argue very few pitchers worth a damn were brought in for a long time. For almost a decade there was basically not a single good starter brought in. Look back at our drafts. They were atrocious for SPs. Atrocious may be kind. What's below that?

I wouldn't count Julio as a failed development either. He's had 3 really strong seasons and is 26.

If the guys recently drafted all flame out it's an issue, because the upside for a lot of them is significant. That upside didn't exist because the drafting was so poor.

Do you think Wood would have figured it out in Atlanta? I have my doubts.

Apparently, Dodgers staff found something in his mechanics and fixed him

It's possible. Wood has always been talented and showed that with the Braves. He ramped up his strikeouts last year before injury and so far this year he's improved in all areas across the board. With that being said baseball is filled with guys who get 'fixed' by another team and have them perform and previously unseen levels.

It certainly happens. Here he was losing what... 3 or 4 mph off his FB? McDowell being let go may give us a glimpse of how that worked out?

I think that is overstated. Looking at his velocity charts he always spiked in fastball velocity whenever he was a reliever. That being said his velocity on his two seamer this year is averaging 92.7 which it never did here. So he's found something. But I wouldn't say he had declining velocity with the Braves.

Pretty sure there was a fangraphs article on it

Drew Smyly to have Tommy John surgery. I guess it's good the braves didn't trade Mallex Smith and prospects for him as he has not pitched in 2017 and looks like he will not in 2018.

Caraniti looks like one of those prospects who trading away doesn't look so great after the fact, but I don't guess he's proven himself yet.
