Official 2017 Trade Deadilne Thread

Harper is an all time talent. If Kershaw hit FA he would command just as much.

Kershaw can opt out that same year but i would guess he does it just to get more years and a little more AAV from LA.

Im aware that Machado and Harper probably get 400 and 500 mil.

But position players are at way less risk than pitchers are, which is why they dont cost as much.

And Machado/Harper will only be 25-26 years old, and can get 10 years, 400-500 million dollar contracts.

But even still, the cost of trading for a cost controlled ace is extremely expensive.

The cost of trading for a controlled ace is expensive. The cost of trading for any type of controlled elite talent is going to be expensive. FA position players earn more $$ per WAR than their pitching equivalents. It just may not seem that way the last few offseasons because we haven't seen those elite hitters hit the open market. Also position prospects are valued more than their pitching equivalents.

Of course Kershaw would. He's the best pitcher since Maddux and likely ends up top 10 all-time barring injury.

Using Harper is the same argument though.

Someone like Machado vs. Strasburg is a an interesting argument. Probably Macahdo gets more.

Fair enough. Price and Scherzer are two recent examples of top tier starters getting 30 million per year on the open market. I do see Machado clearing that easily.

Let me circle back around on something. If Harper and other big names are about to get that kind of money...if we could make a trade for Stanton that included Kemp (and not many prospects)...why would we not do it. If we are talking $400-$500 mil for players in the next few years...as crazy as that sounds...could be decent value (if you add shedding Kemp).

i'd rather make a play for LoCain this winter.

Cain, Ender, Acuna would be a nasty defensive outfield.

The Stanton contract is going to be worse than the Kemp deal in the not so distant future. Surely no one expects him to age any better than Matt has, and backloading that contract makes it a death knoll for teams trying to acquire Stanton.

I'm not sure that deal doesn't eventually wind up worse than Boston's deal with Panda.

the length of Stanton's contract makes it very risky

If its up to me I would keep our prospects and only sign short term FA contracts then go after Harper. I could only imagine the offense with Freeman and Harper.

Acquiring Stanton - even if you were able to unload Kemp's short-term money - would mean there wouldn't be money to extend Swanson, Albies, Acuna, Freeman (in the event they could tack on an extra two or three years to his deal at this point), or any of the arms.

No one other than big market clubs can afford to swallow that contract without crippling themselves IMO.

I would feel comfortable giving Harper 40M per season for 10 years. Thats how you build a dynasty with all this other young talent on the way.
