7/20 GDT: Atlanta Braves (45-48) vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (66-29)

He isn't now, for sure—he's just average in 2017—but I think you're underselling his ceiling; I think the pieces are there to elevate to a consistently good-to-great #2, even if he's never likely to ascend to true ace status. That #2 tier may be the least-likely quintile, but I still think the potential is there and non-trivial.

I feel like this opinion has persisted thanks to a fastball that's never seemed to miss enough bats.

You could be right, and I don't disagree with your points.

His breaking/off-speed stuff, in general, has really impressed me the last couple starts I've seen.

For me its been the life on his fastball. He came up with a reputation for not having much movement on the fastball. I don't think that's true anymore. He throws a fair number of pitchers over the middle of the plate that the hitters are not able to do much with.

I've noticed some 2 seamed against lefties starting the ball at their hands and getting the inside strike call. Very impressive.

The fact that we've been impressed by two very different aspects of his repertoire speaks, I think, to his very positive development this season.

Wood's definitely been edging toward ace status, but if he loses control he could blow up at any time.
