I'm optimistic vis-à-vis Acuña, but guarded generally, re forecasting prospects. You, obviously, are not—at least when it comes to Acuña. So, in the grand tradition of board-darling Enscheff, I propose a wager—but, breaking from the master, I propose no board-related stipulations, and no penalties for you, should you lose.

If Acuña produces even two seasons, out his first five full seasons, that reach 80% Trout's first-five-full average production (173 OPS+, 9.6 WAR), I will buy one ticket to see the Braves at SunTrust (something I've sworn to never do, after they ingloriously abandoned the City of Atlanta for another county's suburb).

You have a lot of County pride.

I'll never understand why you care so much when you're not from Atlanta, don't live in Atlanta, and for all intents and purposes they're still in Atlanta anyway.

I think it's a punk move, how they left, and why they left—and more than a little racially-tinged, to boot. But the whole stadium-relocation-threats-for-undeserved-public-funding culture bothers me a lot, too—so it's not all about the Braves; in this case, to steal a phrase from JS, and bend it to another context: the economics of [pro sports stadia] stink. Moreover, I had a lot of good childhood memories of driving up to Turner from the panhandle, in the summers, and I think it was far too young a stadium to be relegated to such abandonment. Lastly, I also don't think they're "for all intents and purposes [...] still in Atlanta anyway", so—for me—that should preclude a team from using the city's name... but maybe that results from having lived a long time in an old-school US city, where, if you're in the suburbs, you're decidedly not "for all intents and purposes" in the city.

All in all, it's mostly the first thing—but, regardless, I've certainly enjoyed your quasi-policing my tastes and preferences the past couple days.

Word for word.

But, there a lot of professional sports teams that are not in the immediate downtown area. It's what? A 15-20 minute drive from downtown? The greater metropolitan Atlanta area stretches pretty far to my knowledge. I agree that the politics of sports organization vs city and the strong arming that goes on are almost always sketchy at best, and I didn't like them moving out of the Ted so early in its life either. But, it's not enough to dampen my fandom or anything. I think the rebuild and recent losing has compounded the issue for you. When/if the Braves start winning again, I think you'll be putting on a slightly different face.

I don't know what you're talking about with policing your tastes though. I merely asked a question. And the other day was me 100% joking with you.

Why do the Braves owe the city of Atlanta? And what did the city ever do to encourage them to want to stay?

I live in Cobb and work and spent a lot of time in the heart of the city, so I don't really care about the location either way. But the new location makes WAY more sense for the Braves. Any argument for them staying where they were is purely a romantic notion of a team being connected to a city. The Braves moved to where their fans are. Atlanta did nothing in 30 years to make that area more appealing for people coming in.

the two of you need to come clean and splain to the rest of us what's going on here

As I said, it's a lot of how, why, and when (in the relative life of the previous, publicly-funded stadium) that they did it that puts the really awful taste in my mouth. Plus, it's my team, so the normal holding-the-city-hostage-for-a-new-stadium thing (a pet issue always) really rubs me all the more wrong, in this specific instance, given the perpetrator.

And it's really not losing/rebuilding-based antipathy. I'm a fan who goes to games of the teams I follow even when they're bad; and while I didn't think pushing the re-set button, for the Braves, was the direction the team absolutely needed to go, I have no problem dropping dollars to go see a rebuilding team play ball.

I'm still a fan of my childhood team, so I'll likely still see the team play in other cities. Hell, I saw them for two of the three games they played last season in Phoenix (and would've gone this season, if it hadn't have conflicted with other travel plans)—a metropolis that has much more cause to argue its official city-limits aren't relevant, yet still has its baseball (not to mention basketball) stadium downtown. I likewise saw them every time they played the White Sox, and often when the played the Cubs, too, back in Chicago.

But politically, economically, historically, logistically, I don't support the move—it rankles me, in fact, for the reasons outlined—so I'm not going to plan and pay for trips to Atlanta, just to drive out of the city and up to Cobb County, thus financially rewarding the organization for a decision I detest.

I don't know what you're talking about with policing your tastes though. I merely asked a question. And the other day was me 100% joking with you.

I really did enjoy it! It shows how much you really care, you irascible curmudgeon.
