Around MLB 2017

The following teams are limited to $300k:

Royals

Cardinals

Padres

Reds

A's

Braves

Cubs

Astros

Dodgers

Giants

Nats

Dave Cameron thinks Ohtani will sign for $300k under some scenarios, but I can't imagine a guy giving up $4M-$5M guaranteed just because he is already rich.

I think he goes to a big city club that can pay him $5M: Red Sox, White Sox, Angels, Mets, Phillies, Mariners, Rangers.

How are the White Sox not in the penalty?

Japanese players are a gamble somewhat like Cuban guys are. The ML clubs slobber all over these guys only to have every Ichiro be counterbalanced by 3 Fat Toads.

I'd imagine some team will have an under the table "extension" lined up a year or two into the contract.

I've thought of this scenario as well. Apparently there are some "rules" against it but it can be done without really being done.

The way I look at it is that this guy is already giving up guaranteed mega millions by not waiting another year or two. When looking at it from that perspective the difference between the 300K and 5 million isn't that much. He's giving up a lot more by not waiting.

You mean these three?

As for Otani there is nothing stopping him from holding out after the first season. He could also demand a contract clause that voids after the first year. There are no rules against it. That will probably change if Otani goes that route unless he ends up with a big market team like the Yankees or red sox. It still remains to be seen if the new commish is as much of a shill for the yankees as Selig was.

The Cardinals called Carson Kelly up in July and he's barely played. I wonder if they'd deal him this offseason. Yadi is there until 2020. Which pitcher would it take.

I thought the same thing. I'd love to get Kelly.
