Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

Hernandez to keep his job, like Snitker, because the Braves value the perception of stability (per the AJC) over, you know, actually having a good coaching staff.

I fundamentally disagree with the way this organization is being run right now. Hopefully that changes as offseason progresses, but it's just a colossal faceplant out of the gate.

Baker's staff also released which means Mike Maddux is available, man I want the Braves to go get him.

The Braves would be stupid to not at least call Mike.....he worked with Ron Washington and his brother did great things here, not to mention all the pitching prospects we have...

Most of the pitchers on our team regressed last season in stead of taking a step forward. That includes young arms and veterans such as your ace Teheran. Hernandez needs to be gone.

Braves: We want an analytically savvy guy to serve as our next bench coach

Rockies: We fired Weiss because he wasn't analytically savvy, and then replaced him with Bud Black and improved by 12 games

Braves: Weiss, you're hired!!

Pozzies: Weiss has played in 3 World Series, he just knows how to win!!

Intellies: Then why didn't he win in Colorado?

Pozzies: Derp! Barves Way! Payroll will be Top 10! Moar pitching! Derrrrp!

Bud Black has stunk pretty much his whole career. sometimes good managers have bad results.. sometimes bad managers have great teams.. that said, not a fan of Walter being added.. and sign me up for Maddux lite being on our staff. Dude turned Roark and Strawarm into very good starters.

Huh? Bud Black won with some pretty lean Padres teams.

First, Black is an excellent manager, and should be leading the Braves right now. Allowing Snit to have the job because Freeman and Inciarte like him was another major blunder by the FO.

I'm not really against hiring Weiss as a coach. Maybe he would excel as a coach. Who knows. I certainly don't know.

What I'm against is saying they are looking for a stats guy to be the bench coach, and then hiring a guy who was fired for not being a stats guy.

It proves beyond all doubt they have no idea what the hell they are doing. They can't even identify analytical skill when they claim that's what they are looking for.

Or was the only requirement that the new bench coach be smarter than Snit, Glavine, Frenchy and Joe Simpson? If that's the case, just knowing OBP exists and is important qualifies someone for the job.

Not likely the manager made 12 games worth of difference.

I'm surprised they would move Perez out. Pendleton I'm perfectly ok with.

Worst part is that we're sticking with one of the worst pitching coaches in baseball while Eiland and Maddux are available. Just unbelievable.

It's a long off-season. I remain hopeful until they break camp that Hernandez is shown the door.

I have been beating the same drum for the entire year. Allowing Snit to remain because your players like him is allowing the peasants run the country.

Dusty Baker to Atlanta for manager

Ron Washington promoted to bench coach

Bo Porter first base coach

Brian Jordan to 3rd base coach

Chuck Hernandez pitching coach

Brian Snitker to bullpen coach

Seitzer gets to stay as hitting coach

few changes....

Snitker to 1b coach - doesn't require much strategy, just collect batting gloves and shin guards.
Porter to 3b coach
Jordan traded somewhere other than Atlanta and loses TV pre/post game privileges
Hernandez exiled from the Atlanta organization; Mike Maddux brought in for Pitching Coach
Marty Reed stays bullpen coach

Mixed feelings about the Walt Weiss hire. I had hoped for a more distinct analytics background, but it's sounds like he evolved a bit with guidance from Colorado's front office when it comes to utilizing input from their analytics staff. Not the best outcome, but I give the Braves some credit for leaving the comfort zone of TP and Eddie and making at least a modest upgrade. Gotta start somewhere

The news I'm more disappointed about is the likely retention of Chuck Hernandez. The market is flooded with superior pitching coaches that have become available.

If the manager isn’t an analytical guy, why do you guys think he’d listen to a bench coach that’s an analytical guy?

Just another "Good Ole Boys" reasoning for keeping Hernandez. He's the 1st one to be gone just ahead of Hart. Pitching regression is a face slapper and more than enough reason to be gone.

Reason given for retaining Hernandez ---

The Braves seemed reluctant to make a pitching-coach change for the second consecutive year, after firing longtime pitching coach Roger McDowell last winter.

From DOB Blog in AJC

Pitching coach Chuck Hernandez, meanwhile, likely will be retained despite the inconsistent performance of a pitching staff that had several underperforming veterans and a median age that was steadily reduced throughout the season, to the point where four rookies were making starts by the end of the season. Not entirely sure anything's actually "decided" until MLB finishes its investigation and penalties are announced.
