Megathread: Braves lose Maitan, Bae and 10+ plus International Sanctions.

If the signing bonuses were dramatically higher, then Liberty and McGuirk had to have known. I would welcome MLB coming down hard on Liberty beyond just losing that money and fines. A new owner would be nice. Someone with a face who might actually show up to a game and root them on.

@BillShanks

I certainly don't see or hear anyone taking up for John Hart today. I doubt it will happen anymore. Maybe now people will realize why I was so adamant that he had to go.

---

He was?

He was definitely fairly anti-Hart.

So we went over the penalty like everyone else does (at times in 2016). How is it we are lossng ALL these guys? I understand about KM...but we really didn’t “have” to cheat with the others??

That's likely to be my favorite part of all this when it inevitably comes out that we did cheat more than others. We didn't have to cheat any worse than the rest. We just had to outbid others. If we did other stuff to gain an edge others didn't have, it's just pathetic.

I now think striker42 is / has been right, and MLB just sees this as a strategic opportunity to noose a non-money-market team during a non-competitive moment and "set an example" that's also relatively convenient for the league.

But...we were over the penalty. We could outbid away...it didn’t matter. We could have dropped any amount...the ending amount past the penalty was pretty much moot right??

BREAKING: Star prospect Kevin Maitan is one of 12 Atlanta Braves minor leaguers expected to be declared a free agent after league investigation, sources tell Yahoo Sports. In addition, Braves will suffer significant restrictions in 2019-20 and 2020-21 international FA classes.

Other penalties: The Braves will not be allowed to sign 14-year-old shortstop Robert Puason, the top player in the class of 2019, with whom they had illegally struck a deal. Atlanta also will lose a third-round draft pick in 2018 for offering inducements to a drafted player.

we are already restricted in 2018-19

Wow. Coppy and pals must have really moved money and benefits around. Every single team could be penalized otherwise BA wouldn't know who the teams are signing well before the IFA period at least a year in advance. If the hit was this heavy, imagine if the Braves hadn't "self-reported."

I get a significant penalty...this seems incredibly punitive. I hope we get details....

Holy hell. This is worse than anyone imagined.

Blakely made sure the Braves burned. I wonder how bad things were going to be before he volunteered more info to MLB and finally got Hart fired. How much did Hart trying to scapegoat Coppy and Blakely cost the Braves?
