Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

It's really hard to believe the Giants just traded their best prospect though. They better hope this gamble pays off.

He's their best prospect but he's not like an Acuna, Torres, Vlad Jr, etc.

He's only 57th on MLB.com top 100.

Longoria isn't that valuable, as evidenced by the fact Span was included to offset some salary AND the Rays had to pay SF additional cash.

I think the Rays did pretty well here. They unloaded a large contract for the Giants best prospect...who will immediately replace Longoria at 3B for league minimum.

I'm not so sure this signals a full scale rebuild for the Rays. They just flipped an expensive 3B for a cheap one. They will almost certainly trade Odorizzi...just not for MAdams.

Yeah but Arroyo isn't really good. He's not even Riley good. Better than Demeritte.

Mostly a salary dump by the Rays it appears to me. And probably right to do so. The Giants are the nursing home of MLB clubs.

I think it does because before the trade they needed to shed payroll and after the trade they still do.

No, I agree. But for a team in desperate need of a rebuild, it's bad.

I agree they should rebuild but they probably think last year was a fluke.

With so many veterans on big contracts, they probably cant rebuild right now. If they have a similar year again, maybe they blow it up next winter.

I don't think there is any unbiased source who values Riley higher than Arroyo.

But yes, Longoria is essentially a salary dump.

I know many on this board wanted Longo and even at this cheap price he seems appealing. But I believe we were right to pass on him. As you said, he's entering his decline phase and that's not something we should be looking to get locked into at this point.

How? They are taking Spahn and his 9 million back plus sending some money

You are corect, so pending how much money goes back it could put them back up to the 80M projected mark. They could still just trade Miller and Odorizzi and clear $11M or so and replace them with Bauers and Honeywell.

There were scenarios before the Kemp trade where a Longoria acquisition could have made sense. He is precisely the type of "money only" upgrade the Braves should have been targeting if they were pushing to 85 wins.

Those scenarios no longer exist.

But yes, Longoria is essentially a salary dump.

He made his minor league reputation as a ss where his defense played and his ability to hit outweighed his lack of power or lack of SB speed. Now he's a 3B where that profile doesn't really play and those that do the rankings haven't caught up yet. He doesn't really walk. He doesn't hit for power (2B or HR). His OBP is driven by his BA and had never been higher than .344 until 100 AB last year at AAA. In his short time at the big club last year he was awful at the plate.

IMO, he's way, way overrated.

And, as you know, I'm not that high on Riley either.

The Giants are going down the road the Phillies took a few years ago. They are aging and need to rebuild, yet they just keep doubling down on older and older players.

When they rebuild they might be a prime target for the Braves to trade with.

True statement. They should be sellers and begin rebuilding.

I didn't realize how much Longoria had fallen off over the past few seasons. Not a bad deal for the Rays. Arroyo and Adames gives them a couple of solid young IFs.

yeah... I am much more on the Rays side of this deal. Not a huge return, but they got something from a contract that will eventually go negative.

MAdams just signed for $4M with $500k in incentives.

Where are the folks who thought he had trade value and/or would sign for more than his projected arbitration number?
