Because Trump did for a long time so that means he was either incredibly insecure and/or something else.
I personally think it has much more to do with combating the never ending relentless assault by the globalist elite via their attack dogs MSM that was trying to discredit an obvious Global movement. You can't play clean against the media. They have proven to be purposefully unreliable.

The 'bitching' about immigrants is in regards to the push to legalize 3.5m Daca aged people and allowing them to bring their whole family. That's a disaster policy and should be restricted at all costs.
Border security has been strengthened but needs much more.
