Let's predict who signs the remaining FAs

Passan via MLBTR says the Royals have signed Moustakas to 1 year deal.

The Royals have struck a one-year deal with third baseman Mike Moustakas, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (Twitter links). Jon Heyman and Robert Murray of Fan Rag had reported earlier that the Scott Boras client was nearing a deal to return to Kansas City.

The contract will guarantee Moustakas just $6.5MM — far shy of expectations heading into the winter. That comes in the way of a $5.5MM salary for the coming season and a $1MM buyout of a $15MM mutual option for the 2019 campaign. Moustakas can also earn up to $2.2MM via incentives for the coming season, per Passan. The bonuses would be maxed out at an achievable 450 plate appearances, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today (Twitter link).

MLBTR is also reporting that CarGo is close to signing a return deal to the Rockies for 1 year.

The Rockies are “close” to reaching a deal to bring back free agent outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, according to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag (via Twitter). If finalized, the deal would be for a one year term, per the report.

The possibility of a reunion has existed to some extent all winter, but whispers have picked up steam of late. His former teammates have pined for a return for the long-time Colorado star and GM Jeff Bridich has suggested all along it was at least a possibility.

So far nerfherders is the only person to get one right when he picked Mous back to K.C.

We kinda suck at this.

Nope, i saw something on twitter AA is basically taking an L this winter en route to going for one of the big boys next winter.

The speculation on this board about the Braves potentially signing Machado or Harper is going to be hilarious.

I think I'll keep a huge post going about it documenting all the silly predictions.

Uggghhh... Don't get me wrong, I would love it if one of their flights of fancy came true. But sometimes you just have to look at the evidence that is in front of you and just realize that the Braves aren't in a position to compete for top tier free agents, even with a lot of money to spend next offseason. You just don't invest one third of your payroll into one player. You just can't. And payroll isn't going up to 150 million any time soon either. That doesn't mean we can't go and grab good value on the market and build a really competitive team with the young guys we have. We don't HAVE to have Machado or Harper to do that.

I dont think we'll get either, i think they'll go for Donaldson but i worry about the yearly length.

I must have missed any serious suggestions that they'd sign Harper. As far as Machado goes, though, some writers seem to perpetuate that one. Maybe they've mentioned Harper as well, but my sense of incredulity blocked me from viewing.

Donaldson will be too old near the end of the contract. I would rather go with Riley (assuming he keeps playing well), and up grade another position. We don’t need anymore “Give a guy a 5 year contract, when he might be in full decline the last 2 years”. Machado would be a smarter option even it was for a good bit more money. Pay young guys that will stay in their prime throughout the contract.

Realistically...if Riley could give you 20 HRs and bat say .280 his rookie year....better to upgrade another position.

By the way...I am not big on signing Machado, I just think he would be worth it (not that we have a chance). I think Donaldson could turn into a dud rather quickly.

Machado is still super ****ing young, he's like 25-26 still, he'd be worth it but he seems destined to be a Yankee.

If you were ever going to spend big on a free agent, Machado would be the type of one you'd want. You stand a chance of getting mostly prime years and his realistic ability to play SS means you can find a spot for him somewhere without any question as his defense declines.

Phils appear to be the favorite for Arrieta. I may have finally got one right!

On a side note, the Phillies will have given up their 2nd and 3rd picks to sign FAs ahead of a non-competitive season. They may be short circuiting their rebuild by trying to open their window too soon.

Phillies close to a deal with Arrieta according to Heyman.

Interested to see the terms.

Agreed. I don't get this strategy.
