GDT: 3/29/18 - Atlanta Braves vs. Philthies (ITS OPENING DAYYYYY)

What was the kurt blunder. What did I miss. To me the first blunder was letting JT even pitch the sixth. Opening day. I would have put winkler in to start cl an and let him go two innings. The other blunder is thinking brothers is a major league pitcher. Dude needs to pitch in mop up games for a month to earn my trust again.

Also this team needs to steal. Not one attempt I don’t believe.

F*** the game, I need more YNOT players,

You can still play for this series only.

Coupon is good for this series to get more players.

It's so fitting that an analytics organization suffered a loss due to overmanaging after years of saying how the manager is essentially meaningless. Even more ironic is that the over managing resulted from the analytics themselves.

Was it overmanaging or their bullpen ****ting the bed?

The ability of the bullpen doesn't go into a managerial decision or the probalistic outcomes of an analysis?

Sure it does. But even with probable odds the bullpen can still make bad pitches. Nola has historically turned into a #5 starter the 3rd time through the order. Removing him wasn't the problem.

Come on man. Dude was dominating with 68 pitches. There is no chance we score the same amount of runs if he was left in the game. That was an absurdly stupid decision. Analytics are a tool but they should not drive decision making. Weight it heavily I agree.

Remember when I said Snit deserves another chance to prove he isn’t an idiot now that he has an analytical FO feeding him info? Well, first game of the season he proves yet again he doesn’t know how to manage a BP properly.

Albies hit that ball out with a swing that shows he may have the power we are hoping makes him a 5+ win player. That was impressive.

The Braves didn’t sell out opening day. Those thinking the Braves will have higher attendance than last year should probably reconsider their position on the subject.

So teams should ignore analytics, and instead rely on your crystal ball?

I am so glad this type of stupidity has been (supposedly) purged from the organization. Now if we could just purge it from these comments we would really be onto something.

You know this how?

How about use analytics and common sense at the same time?

Surprised it was not a sell out, but it 97.7% of capacity for a terrible game time. Bet next 2 games will be sell outs

You are literally quoting a post where I said to give the analytics the most weight in a decision.

Call it my gut instincts but more easily it's obvious.

I'm sure it was obvious during all the other games last year where he pitched like an ace the first 2 times through the order and got lit up afterwards too. They also brought in a guy who Freeman was 0-5 against. Sometimes they don't work out but the decisions aren't wrong.

You could walk freeman and easily get out of that inning. Nola is a young pitcher. His ability is not defined at this time.

Because pitchers are commonly cruising until they aren’t. I guarantee you someone in the Phillies analytics department has done the legwork to show that pitching well through the order twice does not predict they will continue to do so the third time.

The basic data we have on pitchers facing the order the third time already has an extremely strong survivor bias in the data. Only pitchers who are good and pitching well enough to stay in the game that long are allowed to face an order a third time. That collection of good pitchers pitching good games make up the data we have about facing the order a third time, and they still perform much worse.

Or they can rely on the same “common sense” and “gut feelings” the smart teams have already proven are wrong most of the time. Last time I checked I haven’t seen any team beefing up their Gut Feeling Departments, but they are rapidly staffing their analytics groups.

Folks like tehteh can’t separate the results from the process. It’s a metal leap many aren’t capabale of making.

He also thinks the Braves are going to increase attendance this year.
