Around Baseball - 2013 Postseason GDT Edition

Was looking at bad contracts to unload BJ and Uggla and I came up with an intriguing option. BJ and Uggla for Josh Hamilton. I recall rumors that the Braves were intrigued by the idea of signing him when he was a FA although they couldnt afford him. He's owed more money than BJ and Uggla combined over the next 4 years because of a heavily back loaded contract. Hamilton is owed 107.6 million over the next 4 years. BJ is owed 62.2 million over the next 4 years and Uggla is owed 26.4 million over the next 2 years. The Angels would save 20 million over the last 2 years of BJ/Hamilton's contract. The Braves take on the extra salary since Hamilton is a better bet to be a productive major league player over the next 4 years. Maybe he thrives in a low pressure environment. He is certainly more capable of being a big middle of the order bat than BJ or Uggla will ever be. Would be like releasing Uggla/BJ and signing Hamilton for 4 years 20 million.

Not a terrible idea, but that means Heyward gets moved to CF full-time and I'm not a fan of that idea

Well its trading two completely useless all or nothing hitters for a slightly useless all or nothing hitter with more upside.

I don't mind Verducci but Dirk is very very very very very annoying.

One problem with Twitter and the internet is it sets up celebrities with direct access to information that would have been hidden from them in the past during times like this.

You mean the good old days like this?

Could you imagine if there was twitter back then.

I am okay with it for next season, but I wouldn't want him there long term. If we made a trade like that (unlikely the Angels give up on Hamilton so soon IMO), then Justin Upton would likely be let go after his contract runs out (or traded before hand). He'd also probably be less apt to re-sign here anyway if we trade his brother.

Yup.. Only way I''d consider it was if there was like a Justin for a stud CF trade or something.

If one Upton is traded, then you'd have to figure the other would be too. Though I could see it being a year apart if BJ Upton is somehow the first Upton to go. Personally, I expect both Upton's will be here next year. But I do see Wren trying hard to move Uggla.

If Wren moves Uggla we're looking at at least eating up half of his remaining salary.

Or taking on a similarly bad contract.

I think Uggla to the AL has some potential.

Some ideas

Uggla for Beckett - Net savings for the Braves of about 9M Dodgers get a much safer bet as Beckett has been hurt all the damned time.

Then of course there's the potential of just pawning him off on a team. Say Detroit loses Infante in FA, then Uggla and some cash for nothing could work but Detroit wouldn't take back too much cash.
