2018 DRAFT LIST AND SIGNINGS

Again.... this doesn't hurt in the bogus refill the system narrative. One of the first two picks you pick and advanced college bat/pitcher and that player is already at or ahead of where Steward would have been anyways.... think a bit about this. Do you want a guy who relies on his wrist for his best pitch (the reason he was a first round pick) to be our first round pick if the injury is serious?

We could pick a college player but that adds restrictions to the pool you're picking from instead of going BPA. It might work out fine but it's better to not be desperate for more developed talent.

And if Stewart's arm is seriously messed up, not signing him is the correct choice. Doesn't make the draft better though. Losing out on the 8th pick still sucks.

So you’d rather take the cheap international signing over the big money ones. That’s a new one.

No, I'm just saying your theory of our rookie levels being devoid of upside is short sighted and unclear. We've already seen how unheralded signings come out of nowhere and become stars. This is about the draft and not the international market, though... so I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to prove. Not signing Stewart doesn't hurt the restocking of our system... he's one player (and he's not an elite talent if his wrist is falling off... if it wasn't serious, do you really think the Braves wouldn't be offering over the rumored 40%? Come on)... and we get two next year who could be at the same talent level... and one could be already advanced past where Stewart would be next year. Why is this so hard to understand?

Because I’m saying that banking on some random international player to turn into an advanced prospect like Acuña and Albies doesn’t happen near as much as you’re making it sound. And because of that and the fact that we are punting our first round pick this year, it doesn’t look like we’ll have advanced prospects in the lower levels next year. Kicking it down the road isn’t a huge deal (and I’ve said as much), but the “draft a college bat and everything’s fine” argument isn’t guaranteed considering our GM and scouting department have shown a preference for high school picks. Just hoping it doesn’t create a gap of talent in our system.

Not really sure why it’s difficult for you to have a conversation with someone whose opinion is different than yours.

So what do they get hmm? A bull**** pick after the 1st next year? That is a whole lot of nothing.
They get the 9th overall pick. You obviously aren’t well informed on this issue, so I think you would put your mind at ease if you read up a bit, composed yourself, then came back to post in this thread.

Just saying... Stewart is not really a big deal when it comes to restocking. He's one player. You seem to struggle with differing opinions as well my friend.

Come on. You take all the cheap international free agents, I’ll take all the big money ones. Who’s going to end up with better players?

"All" might be a bit of a stretch given the huge busts recently. You'd certainly expect the odds to be in your favor, but it's not likely to be the slam dunk many would think.

Ronald Acuna $100K
Victor Robles $225K
Adonis Medina $70K
Sixto Sanchez $35K
Albies $100K
Domingo Acevedo $7,500
Freicer Perez $10K
Jose Altuve $15K
Ender Inciarte $5/$10K
Nelson Cruz $15K
Starlin Castro $50K
Marcel Ozuna $50K
Jose Ramirez $50K
Sal Perez $65K
Kenley Jansen $80K
Jonathon Schoop $90 K
Robinson Cano $100K
Keibert Ruiz $140K
Jorge Mateo $250K
Estevan Florial $200K
Sandy Alcantara $125K
Fernando Romero $260K

73% of the players signed during the 2015 July 2nd period signed for less than $100K, the median bonus was $30K, and 37% signed for $10K or less.

Thought Albies signed for $350k?

No one said good players don’t sign for cheap. But at the end of the day, everyone prioritizes the big money guys for a reason.

I don't know one way or the other, but it seems possible that this is a market inefficiency. It seems that its possible signing 16 year olds and committing millions of dollars to them before we really know what type of player they will be is not always the best way to find the best talent. Its definitely possible that it is the best way, I don't know the bust/break out stats relative to signing bonuses. Maybe going high volume will net you similar value?

This seems really stupid from Stewart’s standpoint and a huge risk. It’s not bad for the Braves as they simply get a high pick next year and won’t level the injury concern with Stewart.

His wrist must be worse than we’ve heard. Hopefully we hear the full story. If Stewart sucks in college then he will kick himself forever for not taking the 2 million or more he was offered.

Sucks not getting Stewart in the system but incredibly risky on Stewart's part to turn down 4 million.

At the end of the day we'll probably never know the true story, whether we gave a serious low ball offer with little reason to do so, or if the injury was a legit concern. We'll still get a premium talent next year, so it's not like we lose out altogether, but it's still never fun to not sign your first round pick.

The $4 million report was wrong. Callie admitted that today, said it was closer to $2 million. Still risky though.

He wasn't offered $4 million.. that wasn't a correct report. It was reported this morning that he was offered closer to the 40% slot value than $4 millon
