8/13/18 DH GAME THREAD vs MARLINS

Enscheff and I had a nice little back-and-forth a while ago about a .340 BABIP for Acuna. I'm keeping watch on that one...

...which would further prove their stupidity.

And fine, Ender was 4 wins better than Miller in 2016.

If Dansby had been properly valued the deal would not have looked so good.

Miller was a 3-4 WAR win pitcher with 3 years of control. That was a pretty valuable asset. It's what the Braves got for Heyward's broken face, after all.

That he went on to get injured and was ineffective truly did suck for Arizona.

Inciarte literally was their 4th OF and they had every reason to think they had internal options that could fill that role.

Dansby would not have been so recklessly rushed through the Diamondbacks system because they didn't need a floppy haired face of the franchise or an all glove, no hit SS.

....

I've already said they probably should have gotten more in return. But the shock of the deal was that the D-Backs gave upon a former #1 pick. When you adjust for Swanson not really being that good, it makes more sense.

You are looking at it from how it has panned out today. The fact of the matter is that all of the players involved had an assigned value to them, and the D'backs overpaid tremendously. Even if all of what you said is true, they could have gotten a Miller level pitcher for much less and then used whatever was left over to further improve their team. It was just a ridiculous valuation on their own players.

I am not sure what the state of the Braves pen is right now, but like Parsons the other day, Allard may be the only long relief option available today.

Which is probably the reason he would be held back.

Holding back the mop up guy from pitching mop up innings in case he is needed for future mop up innings is quite possibly the dumbest BP management idea ever.

Don't we also get an extra pitcher today for the DH? Man I really took for granted how good a mop up man Cristian Martinez was for us. I hated watching him pitch in high leverage situations but he was a quality mop up guy.

Yep, looking at the pen -- Allard is the only guy who could conceivably give you three or four innings. So he's probably being held as insurance for Folty coming out early.

Not really an ideal scenario, but he's what the front office has provided.

Inciarte was coming off a 2.4 fWAR season and was a starter in the OF with Pollock and Peralta. He was still controlled for, what, 4 years?
in 2016, they started Yasmany Tomas, Michael Bourn, and Brandon Drury for a majority of games because Pollock got hurt. Ender is/was better than all of them except for Pollock.
He might've been their "4th OF" technically, but he shouldn't have been - because he was their 2nd best OF.

You're adjusting our end after the fact, but not their end. If you adjust for Swanson only being about league-average (which is far better than the 'not really that good' you gave him), then you have to also adjust for Miller completely and totally sucking, not the 3-4 win pitcher you credit him for being.

And Ender and his 561 PA and 5+ bWAR was not their 4th OF. If they thought of him as such, or if they believed they could easily replace him, then again, it only further proves their stupidity.
