Braves sign Mac Attack, 1 yr 2 million deal

McCann sucks now. This is not a good move as we really needed to upgrade at this position since we have guys locked in almost everywhere else.

This is pretty disappointing. I felt like we had the options to make a tangible improvement at catcher without breaking the bank. Hopefully this means that we'll be spending bigger on the outfield and on bench depth.

It means we have a lot left for outfield, bench, pen and possibly the rotation.

AA is really smart. Bringing in Bmac and probably Donaldson on low risk deals. He can still go after anyone big, but doesn’t have to force anything. Can just let the card fall where they fall.

Love to have McCann back. Not optimistic about our catching situation in 2019 but whatever. We definitely need a solid LF bat now.

this is fine, I think.

I could have seen the argument for Ramos, but this is a move that is on the order of a buy low with not real lasting exposure. If he doesn't bounce back, they can look at the trade market later. Cervelli is an obvious candidate to be moved at the deadline for example.

After seeing the Donaldson deal, I'm kinda getting a better idea of what AA is doing. He is making some low risk 1 year signings with the idea of clearing all this money off the books next season and maintaining our flexibility. I like the approach.

I still think that committing 3 years to Ramos or Grandal would have been preferable, but the Donaldson news makes this signing more acceptable.

McCann will be great for the clubhouse as well.

Any Lairdership you lost with Markakis you've gained with Mac. Also may be grooming him to eventually be a manager at some point. I assume with Mac's last 2 years in HOU he's learned the value of analytics and what they can do for a pitching staff and the defense. Mac was always one of the best pitch framers in baseball in his prime whether he bought into analytics or not. So this could be a long-term thinking move. Eventually get Weiss out of there who's anti-analytics and plug in Brian who can bring enough old school mentality combined with new thinking to our team. Lots of people were sad Rossy wasn't a Braves-4-Life type of guy, but Mac is definitely a guy I've always wanted back with the organization at some point. The Carlos Gomez/Jose Fernandez thing was a little overdone but at least that'd satisfy the Braves Way types in the organization while AA transitions us into the future still. I'm sure Mac knows AA has worked with analytics the last few years especially being in the LAD org. He probably is smart enough to see where this club his headed and probably buys into it as well as just coming home.

WELCOME HOME MAC ATTACK.

Saving $ at catcher increases the odds we do a deal with the Dbacks that involves both Peralta and Greinke.

Would seem to be a much better idea to just go get one of the Cleveland arms and sign a Closer IMO. $25 million for Mac and Donaldson leaves $9,000,000 for Carrasco and enough to sign Britton/Familia/Robertson/Soria.

Camargo would seem to make a lot of sense for the Indians as part of a Carrasco deal, and AA could grab Joyce to platoon with Duvall in LF.

Optimistically, it's hard to gauge 2018 since he was injured for so much of it. But he finished the year well when he came back from injury. Historically, he's been a great framer and there isn't much to suggest that pitch framing is an eroding skill, so his poor framing in 2018 could be an aberration. He cost only 2 million so he's low cost and won't hinder our ability to acquire a catcher at the deadline if need be.

Would rather have had Grandal, Ramos, or Gomes, but Mac still has plenty of upside. If he plays like he did in 2017, he's an absolute steal.
