2018 Offseason And Targets

I keep getting the feeling that we have a potential deal in place that will fill or upgrade a couple of positions with a team that will be looking to shed some salary to sign a Big name free agent like Harper or Machado. AA likes taaking on salary for value in another player and he also likes package deals. This would make sense as to why we've sat on our hands all this time.

There's a small part of me that would not be surprised with a trade being executed today to be discussed tomorrow during Chop Fest.

I think that a possible Realmuto deal hinges on us giving more prospect capital and receiver more pieces. They're a horrible team with a couple really valuable pieces. We could feast if we make the right move.

It's wishful thinking I know, but I'd love to see some kind of mega-deal that brought back Realmuto and Anderson.

If we add realmuto, would a duvall and markakis/cargo platoon be enough?

Acuna
Realmuto
FF
Donaldson
Albies
Duvall/markakis/cargo
Ender
Swanson

I don't think even Jeter is dumb enough to trade away Anderson. He's comig off a great rookie campiagn and more than likely being marketed as a team building block in Miami.

IMO it would be. You would be looking at 5 guys with 4+ WAR with another at ~3. That's super strong and just offensively speaking that 1-4 would be one of the best in baseball.

I agree. I think we're strong enough 1-5 to be able to support a Duvall/Markakis/Cargo platoon. I actually think Kakes would be more than fine with those other guys topping the lineup.

The funny thing to me is that they went out and spent huge bucks to upgrade a position of strength just to ignore one of our biggest weaknesses. I have to say that I'm not as high on AA as most here. Duvall is terrible, always has been. Trading for him was odd, signing him through arbitration this season is even more curious. I don't see a fit for him at all here. He's not even a viable bench bat.

I don't think you can say they've ignored anything until everything shakes out... we have no idea what's going on behind the scenes and there are still plenty of options left everywhere.

A bit of an odd thought, but...

Maybe the Harper situation actually IS what's holding everything up for us. Just assume for a minute that the reports that money isn't the concern (or at least the biggest one) at this point are right. If Pollock's camp's holding out for a 3 or 4 year deal, about the only landing spot left for him would be Philly. If Harper actually does sign there, where else is left for him?

Offer him a pillow deal like Donaldson and Grandal got so he can try to erase some of the health concerns and go back out on the market next winter at 32 in the hope he can get a deal like the Phillies gave McCutchen.

At that point, I'd seriously consider backing-off from any Realmuto deal - leaving you with Riley and Pache as your instant 2020 replacements in case neither Donaldson or Pollock can stay healthy this year and give you the feeling you want to bring either back. Cut Duvall loose and bring in any of Markakis/CarGo/Joyce as your Pollock insurance and you've still got Johan to delay Riley in the event Donaldson goes down early. A Mac/Flowers, Camargo, Markakis/CarGo/Joyce, Culberson bench could be pretty strong.

I get the point that they're worried about giving up the pick, but would AA honestly give up the chance to add Pollock on HIS terms?

Then which one of cargo and markakis would you chose? Markakis' obp or cargo's pop?

Neither

why not? him getting on base 36-37% of the time in front of freddie/donaldson/JTR would be great, IMO.

Because he's going to be like the 6th best hitter on the team if the Braves get JTR and I don't want to give him that many PAs. Also I feel his OBP will be closer to the 34-35% range.

Acuna-JTR-Freeman-JD is how I would go

9:15 Padres opening day 3rd baseman is....
Jeff Sullivan
9:16 Not in the organization right now
9:17 There was that rumor the other day that connected them to Kluber so that they could try to get Senzel. Hard to see that actually happening but they're presumably aiming high. Along similar lines, you wonder if they might try for Riley from the Braves

9:25 Whose Braves' opening day RF? Brantley seemed perfect fit. They don't wanna lose draft pick to sign Pollock. Jones/Cargo/Markakis seem fairly underwhelming, as does Duvall. Maybe they're just gonna let Acuna & Inciarte roam a 2 man outfield.
Jeff Sullivan
9:26 Right now I think of Markakis as the favorite, but I also read that Wil Myers is returning to the outfield, which means the Padres have even *more* of an OF surplus. There's some kind of trade there to be made

So...which SD OFer do you want in exchange for Riley?

Possible targets:

Myers - 28 year old RHH, projected for .240/.322/.433, still owed 4/64
Margot - 24 year old RHH, projected for .259/.312/.384, still pre-arb
Reyes - 23 year old RHH, projected for .251/.320/.458, still pre-arb
Renfroe - 27 year old RHH, projected for .246/.297/.462, still pre-arb
Cordero - 24 year old LHH, projected for .248/.300/.422, still pre-arb

Personally, I'm not too excited by the thought of giving up Riley for any of those guys.

What about Camargo? How does he matchup up value wise with Riley and the padre guys?

i'd be interested in Reyes. but not straight up for riley.

If we consider which teams have more corner outfielders than they need we may have a hint. The Padres are one possibility but none hold great appeal.

The Reds have Kemp, Puig, Winker and Schebler. They also would be interested in a young starting pitcher who was near major league ready. They are also looking for a spot to play Senzel and have discussed moving him to the outfield.

The Cubs have Happ, Zobrist, Heyward and Schwarber. Also would be interested in a young near major league starting pitcher.

The Dodgers have Taylor, Pederson, Verdugo. Kike Hernandez also is there but he will probably play mostly second. Bellinger too, but he mostly plays first and center. They may move Seager to the outfield at some point. I imagine they are quietly in on Harper and/or Machado.

It seems to me we match up best with the Reds, Cubs and Dodgers when it comes to a potential trade for a corner outfielder.

The Twins are another possibility. They could move Kepler and create more playing time for Cave.
