Neil Walker has signed with the Marlins 1 year deal

Well now the Marlins have spent all their available money this offseason. I guess they are officially out on Harper/ Machado now.

To keep the half dozen Marlins fans from being upset Mish is about to tweet that Marlins are in talks with themselves about trading JTR to their AAA team in return for their top 4 prospects.

The best trade the fish could make is to trade Jeter to any team for their 3rd base coach. Until then that team will not compete for anything.

Maybe make it age related instead of service time related? So a team controls you through, say, age 25? Just a random thought

Not sure what it would be. I would think age related control would push more teams to draft HS players and go for 16 yo dominicans. I'm thinking the answer may be higher minimum salaries for minor league guys with 4 years minor league service time.

Maybe make it 26 for high school/international players and +8 years for anyone drafted in college, so a 20 year old would be controlled through his age 28 season. I'm not sure that is a great solution overall, though.

The end is JTR stays with the Marlins, he is extremely unhappy, we play this song and dance again next year with the same result, nothing. This all ends when JTR walks as a free agent in two years. End of saga.

They dug their heals in to get a huge over pay because they did so poorly on the other trades that no team is biting and it very well could play out like this. If they don’t trade him this off season then the return will never be higher and will probably end like you said.

They have botched this so bad. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve pissed off several teams and lost future trading partners.

We'll see what they end up with. It still wouldn't shock me for them to get fair value for JTR but they are the Marlins so

Yeah they need to trade him before ST. Once that starts you run the risk of injury of course, which would tank his value

My guess is the best offer for JTR was the rumored Riley / Soroka offer during the season. I think the Marlins missed their best offer and are scrambling trying to find a similar offer.

Some team would overpay at the deadline I’m sure

Always a possibility but teams are getting smarter about that. Certainly they are conditions that would make his value the same right now as it would be at the deadline. So they have time. But they are the Marlins and are likely to mess this up.

The fact they are risking injury and/or regression in hopes of him maintaining current value would be so Marlins/jeter.
