Bryce Harper projects to be a 5 WAR player. Donaldson+McCann+Muk project to be 6 WAR players total.

So that's the simple part.

Then add the risk associated with a long-term commitment.

Plus the fact Bryce is going to make an AAV north of the 31M you are assuming.

Plus a good chance we get a draft pick from losing Donaldson.

And your question answers itself.

Wouldn’t you have to include the other starters at those positions to make this comparison work? Like you did on the Braves? Basically signing Harper at that salary would have inserted a full time 3b still at a minimum

I think 2-2.5 conservatively. 2.6-3+ optimistically.

If you factor in framing, I think you could maybe be a little more aggressive than that. WARP had Flowers at 2.9 last year in just 82 games and I think a healthy McCann could reasonably be expected to put up another win or two. If going by WARP, my guess would be about 3.5-4.5 collectively

Good, someone else overpaid for Realmuto. He wasn't a significant enough upgrade over what we have to justify that in my opinion. An OF would be, but not catcher.

Yeah i would not have wanted him for that price. Would've preferred he'd gone to the Reds or the Rays tho

it is a more complicated thing than that...if Camargo is going to get 100 or so starts as a utility player you have to replace that as well...

So MLB is renaming the disabled list the injury list because they believe there it causes a misconception that disabled people are injured and can't participate in sports.

I saw this on Twitter and thought it was an Onion article until I saw it was from ESPN.

Well- to be fair, I think most folks are glad AA didn’t do anything totally dumb here. While it may not look “ballsy,” this is a long long process, and there is certainly no reason to overpay - which in my opinion Philly just did, and anything more than Riley (which would have pissed me off- I think he’s a stud and our future 3B in ‘20 when **** gets real) was even worse.
Sorry for length- to sum: good for fish - kinda. Bad for philly. Great for us.

Flowers is really good at pitch framing. If he hits anywhere near his 16 and 17 levels the Braves will be one of the better teams in the league at the position. I just don't think that's anywhere close to a guarantee right now.

Remains to be seen how much of the catching he does. MCCann in theory is the bigger part of platoon, but I assume flowers will get more starts.

Castelanos for me. If he doesn't work out trade him at the deadline. If he does,we have our DH for next yr. Might as well sign Kimbrel too.

Better go ahead and change the International League to the Disabled League to clean up any confusion with the initials

Should have changed it to the Distressed list or something like that. DL had a nice ring to it.
