Mississippi is one of the worst educated states in the country...also one of the fattest...also one of the ****tiest as far as quality of life. the south as a whole is, objectively, worse in those categories than the north as a whole. why would you compare a whole state to a city, anyway?

Mississippi is a weird state. The delta region is basically a third world country while south, central, and northeast Mississippi is relatively on par with the rest of the states in the south. And as far as quality of life is concerned, its debatable depending on what metrics you use to determine quality of life. For example, USNews did a ranking that measured states' natural environment and social cohesiveness that contributes to quality of life. Mississippi ranked 6th, but the ranking did seem to skew towards states with smaller populations. But there is an argument that smaller states that foster tightly knit communities does lead to a better quality of life, at least in some sense.

Other rankings that heavily weight other factors like economic health and education more heavily tend to skew towards the coasts. Point being, I don't think there really is a good standard to judge quality of life. So I don't think saying that MS is the "****tiest as far as quality of life" is really accurate. Mississippi ranks pretty highly in several of the metrics typically used to judge that, but like I said I'm not sure how useful they are.

Believe me, I'm no fan of the south or Mississippi at all. I kinda hate living here. I've lived in five different areas in my life: Mississippi, Alaska, Wyoming, SoCal, and NorCal. If I had to rank them, I'd go Alaska>Wyoming>Norcal>Mississippi>Socal. The only reason I'm still living in Mississippi right now is because my entire family is here, but I plan on moving somewhere north within the next 5 years. But that isn't to say that Mississippi is this awful place to live. It has a lot of redeeming qualities and a lot of charm. You won't meet nicer people, in general. Most of people's negative perceptions on Mississippi stem from the Delta. Its a truly awful place. But the rest of Mississippi really isn't all that different from any southern or midwestern state in the country.

I have no idea why this was brought up on a Braves forum, but I would argue the Mississippi Delta is historically one the most important areas of the country, from a cultural perspective. It is the birthplace of Blues, Jazz, and Rock n' Roll.

This is absolutely true. But a lot of that cultural and musical significance was born out of the fact that everyone there is extremely poor. If you want to see a place that you didn't think could exist in America, go to Sunflower County, Issaquena County, Leflore County, or really anywhere in the delta. You can see some pretty cool things if you go to a place like Clarksdale or Greenwood, but it'll be accompanied by devastating poverty, terrible education, and horrific infrastructure.

This is in contrast to if you go to a place like Madison County, Lamar County, Forest County, or Harrison County. Those places are perfectly fine and enjoyable places to live. Even Desoto County, which is right on the border of the delta, is a fine place to live.

What is there to do near Laurel? The houses and prices on that Home Town show on HGTV make it look appealing to me, but I like backwater places that most people have no reason to visit. I blame that on the Northerner invasion of my Appalachian homeland.

Laurel is okay. Its pretty close to me and its in the Pine Belt, which is one of the better areas in the state. Its close to Hattiesburg, which is a college town with USM and William Carey there. There are a few places to go canoeing or kayaking on the Okatoma River or Black Creek within an hour drive of Laurel. Lots of outdoorsy kinds of things like that. The Bok Homa Casino is really close by.

If you want tons of things to do, you'd probably have to make a ~90 minute drive down to Biloxi. Beaches, Casinos, Minor League Baseball... Lots to do there. Its also about 90 minutes away from Pearl, which is where the Mississippi Braves play so you could easily catch some games there as well. Laurel and Jones County in general is pretty nice, but I prefer to live in Lamar or Forest County. Its closer to Hattiesburg, which is the main hub of the area, and is a little closer to the coast.

MS has some of the best looking women in all of America.

I was in a bar called Ground Zero in Clarksdale I think and I’d hadn’t seen anything like it except a few college campuses. Very few.

i can't say i've ever been there, but yes the perception is terrible, as are mostly all of the metrics.
I don't think i'd want to live in Alaska..

Plus they don't have any teeth so the foreplay is fantastic. You haven't lived until a girl has given you a "gummy" as we like to call it.

Gulfport Oyster house has the best damn grilled oysters in the country...

It does. If you ever find yourself in Hattiesburg, go to Leatha's BBQ. Its easily the best barbeque you'll ever have. Christian Slater ate there once and now he pays them to send him some of their food every month.
