GDT 5/19: Folty v Woodruff

It was in his glove/arm range. It's not like he needed an extra foot of height or stretch. He actuallt wasn't outstretched at all. Ender or any upper echelon CF makes that play no issue. Love Ron but he has weaknesses ad an OF he needs to fix.

His OF defense is not a weakness. He's just not an elite defender.

This idea that it is awesome watching Acuna hit solo HRs while a guy with a .400 OBP and .150 ISO bats 4th has to be the stupidest narrative I’ve seen in a long time.

We've had a solid run of top defense in Atlanta for 25 years.

Andruw
Bourn
Heyward
Ender

Even Kotsay was decent the year he was with us.

If Ron is gonna be the full time CF he better save many runs.

You won't have to listen to the broadcast long to hear another stupid narrative.

He's not going to be the full time CF even if he plays it the rest of this season

The problem with Acuna (not of his making) was the hype he got as he was working his way to the majors. His press clippings essentially said he was this generation's Willie Mays which is a standard he can't possibly live up to. We expected him to show the sizzle defensively that he does offensively and he doesn't. Frankly, I don't think he'll ever be much more than an average to slightly above average defender--at least based on the instincts he's displayed so far. He certainly doesn't show the same defensive traits Andruw Jones displayed at an even younger age.

Enjoy what he is; not what he isn't.

Meanwhile, Swanson gets put in the 2 hole because he’s hot just in time to cool off and be left there sucking for weeks.

So predictably stupid. I can’t wait for all the dinosaurs to be completely flushed from this organization.

I don't mind him not being Willy if he's playing LF. But the standard has been set high for Atlanta CF's over the last 25 years to be top or near the best defensive CF in the league.

Andruw is an unreachable star. Higher than Willy.

Bourn was really good. Heyward was really good. Ender has been amazing in CF not just with glove but with his instincts and outs stolen all across the field with his heads up play and arm.

The more Riley continues to hit the more likely Ron will be playing CF most of the time. So he needs to improve his glovework and routerunning.

Cheff, I asked this question in a separate post based on an article by Michael Cunningham in the AJC but what do you think would be the optimal batting order? (Admittedly, you may have already posted your opinion but, if so, I haven't seen...)

I agree with Individual-1.

Demand the very best and accept nothing less. No reason a guy that young and athletic can't be a good defender.

Except for the Mays part, we agree. IMO opinion Mays was the best of his generation; Jones the best of his. Defensively, I wouldn't say one is better than the other but maybe that's just my old age kicking in.

Andruw spent many divisional games playing at Veterans and Olympic Stadium. Both artificial turf and horrible surface.

Also did it during the steroid/high offensive era. That's why I give him a boost. Maddux and Pedro were dominating during the steroid era too. Should give them more immortal status over other pitchers too.
