Yes, it is too early. You can do an early draft grade in the NFL and the NBA, because the teams in those leagues are depending on the players to make an immediate impact in the following season. Players in the MLB Draft are at least two or three years typically from making any impact. So there’s no sense in trying to immediately grade a MLB Draft, unless you enjoy making yourself crazy.

As striker said, you just can't pick for need in the baseball draft. As sturg said, it's the most difficult sport to project future success.
To your point, Waters and Pache are striking out more than me in a bar during my younger days (I don't go to bars anymore, but I would still likely strike out), so I'm not planning on them being consistent contributors quite yet. You certainly wouldn't draft guys to automatically replace them, but our lower minors are currently a wreck largely due to the international sanctions and there is plenty of opportunity for guys to take time to develop, which would be the argument for higher ceiling/higher risk guys. Maybe those types are coming. I just thought they should have gone for someone like Carroll at #9.

Agreed that no player is perfect at 21. However, most players at that range don't have flaws that make them very difficult to project at any position.

After a glass of whisky and some time to cool down, I'm raising my grade from an F to a D.
We drafted two hitters and neither project as big time bats or even has a superstar ceiling.
Our number 9 pick is praised for pitch framing in an era where robot umps are being discussed.
Our number 21 pick doesn't seem to have a position.
Honestly, the most likely scenario is we drafted two future bench players. The only thing preventing this from being a F is the low bust risk for Langeliers. He's as close to guaranteed to play in the majors as you can get. For that this draft is a D.

This Braves draft just looks....lazy
The odds that a non can't miss catcher ever makes it are very low. Hell, taking ANY catcher is likely a longer shot than HS pitching. I would feel differently if the upside were "could be Rutschman if the hamate injury heals 100%" then I might could get behind it. But that's not it. His upside is "very good defense with a reasonable offensive game." For me, I'm more of a true upside person for a first round pick. Sure, you'll bust more but when you hit the payoff is huge. And if you don't believe that your going to hit on a pick then you're in the wrong business.
Langeliers is like the somewhat homely potential date leading up to the SR prom - a great personality and a little gray on reputation.
But, just when you've convinced yourself that there may be method to the madness, the Braves take the college shortstop equivalent of Langeliers at 21.
Sooner or later, you're just hoggin'
