BRAVES FINAL DRAFT SIGNING BOARD: Backstrom on board!

New Michael Harris writeup by Fangraphs in their prospect update with some info on the decision to let him hit: "Harris would have been an elite college player with top-5 round ability both as a hitter and pitcher, but most scouts preferred him on the mound. He was used unusually during his senior spring, and some scouts think within 12 months in a pro setting he could be 90-93 with everything average to above. But it sounds like Harris blew the Braves away in a private workout and he might instead be deployed, full time, as an outfielder in pro ball."

Braves have had pretty good luck taking guys projected by many as likely pitchers and making them into decent hitters. Klesko and Andrelton Simmons come to mind. Hopefully, they can do the same with Harris. Kid sounds like an elite athlete.

Would have preferred someone like this instead of Philip, to be honest.

According to Jonathan Mayo, 2nd rd. Pick Beau Philip signs underslot for 700k. Slot was 1,157,400. Huge?

Yes. It gives us a lot to play with.

Under slot: Langeliers (949K), Philip (457K), Harris (43K). Total: 1,449K
Over slot: Paolini (267K)

Net so far: 1,182K

Plus we can go up to 5% over slot total without losing a draft pick: that's another 576K

I'm guessing Kalish and Gordon got slightly over slot. The rest will be used for the 6 HS players we drafted between rounds 10 and 20. Maybe a couple others.

One way of thinking about this is we signed Harris, Philip, Paolini for 3rd round money and maybe a few others for a similar amount.

We'll see who is right, but I think both of those guys will be at or below slot. Kakich has some bargaining power, but I don't think things get any better for Gordon than they are right now. Curious about Vines and DeVito. I see DeVito as being in somewhat the same spot as Gordon. Can either of them risk a downturn in performance (in DeVito's case, a further downturn)?

Take it for what it’s worth, but one of the TC prospect guys says they heard Backstrom may have signed. I don’t really think they’re too plugged in, but they haven’t gone on any similar limbs for the others.
