This is an important essential point. Trump policy has been centered on punitive measures and deterrence. This is part of the reason why, in a time of relatively low border migration, we’re seeing these humanitarian concerns. The whole “crisis” thing is essentially a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I keep making this point because it’s entirely relevant. Trump ginned up panic about immigration despite cross-border immigration being at, like, a 30-year low. So, what, the countries of origin are different? There are more families and fewer single men? Shouldn’t that assuage some of your concerns about drug-smuggling and crime? Why does that in itself constitute a crisis, and necessitate creating a crisis with unduly punitive enforcement?

The whole conversation is screwed sideways. Most immigrants with unlawful status are visa overstayers. Most drugs are smuggled through legal ports of entry. Cross-border immigration is at a low point in recent history. Immigrants, regardless of legal status, commit fewer crimes per capita than the native population. The humanitarian issues largely persist because of specific and intentional policy choices by the current administration and by its predecessors. Trump’s predecessors—Obama, Bush, and Clinton—can be justly criticized, but Trump has escalated both rhetoric and policy to a point that has needlessly created additional suffering, in service to a political base motivated by nativism and racism.
