GDT 8/21/19: Getting it Right

Most hitters now are adjusting to high heat, 95 to 100 mph fastballs.

Julio might get it to 93, but he KNOWS HOW TO PITCH. His pitches are actually nasty with the movement. I think he throws spit balls to get that type of movement. They were missing at 87 mph and his curve/cutter/slider, ridiculous.

He might have a bad game once and again, all pitchers do, but we can count on him.

Believe a part of Julio's success is perceived velocity. He has a deceptive delivery so it's not like a typical 89 MPH fastball.

Looking way ahead, i think the top 4 next year is Julio, Folty, Soroka, Max, and 5th could be a number of options. FA, i dont think we re-sign Keuchel. I think we use most of our FA dollars on the offense. Catcher, 3rd base, and OF most important needs.

Wonder how much Riley will factor into the decision to go out and pursue a 3B, since that is his natural position.

His delivery is not natural. You are right. But Dr. Scheff can see his spin rate, they do it in slow motion on TV, it is ridiculous. The guys are not even close.

Do clocks matter that much with pitchers? At some point they pop. Id rather get andersons innings next year on a team where it matters.

They matter, but if Anderson is a legit 1/2, then you'd probably want control over an extra year for him.

Riley has huge issues to work out before being tabbed as the 3B next year. offering the QO to Donaldson or trying to workout a short-term contract is what i see happening.

Riley will come into play in 2020 but I would start him in AAA. I'd try to bring Donaldson back on a 2 year deal. AAV around 25M.

The Braves will likely chase all the guys available for 1-2 year deals, even if the AAV of those deals is huge. I want to say the Braves have the means to sign Rendon, but everything they've done the last few years suggests they won't be doling out a huge contract to a guy in his 30s, and won't be giving up the draft pick tied to a QO guy.

Donaldson may accept the QO, or take a deal similar to what nsacpi suggested. If he declines a QO that means signing him suddenly costs the Braves a draft pick...would that make them pass?

Mous is a good backup option if someone else offers JD 3+ years, or the Braves want to keep the compensation pick.

Grandal may take another short deal with a high AAV, and he is one of my top targets on such a deal.

Any SP with a QO attached may be available mid-season like DK was.

The OF situation is a lot like last off season, so I wouldn't be shocked to see the Braves stick with Acuna/Ender/Markakis and add the best RHH OF they can on a 1-2 year deal. Dream of Ozuna, expect Pence.

Oh, and don't forget about everyone begging AA to sign a BP arm for 3+ years, and then being upset when he doesn't.

I would make similar two year offers to Donaldson and Grandall with the idea of signing one. If neither signs with us Moose is a good plan B.

It would cost the pick they would have gained had another team signed him.

Best case scenario is he accepts the QO, but rather unlikely.

The thing is, Donaldson is going to be 34 next year. It seems like most teams have smartened up from giving a player that old a longer multi year deal while also giving up a pick. So offering him a QO might very well sap his value and force him to accept.

Conspiracy theory, but there is always a chance we gave him a gentleman's agreement that we wouldn't offer a QO in order to get him to sign with us.

true. this is kind of where i'm at. i'm not sure anyone will sign him for 2+ years and also give up a pick for him.

I think we have a good chance of bringing back Donaldson. There will be three good 3rd base free agents: Rendon, Donaldson, and Moose. The three teams losing them will be looking for a 3rd baseman. But I really don't see a 4th team playing in that market. Maybe the Angels, but they have Cozart under contract and he will presumably be recovered from his injury next year.
