Markakis is a perfectly legitimate option as a bat off the bench or as the left handed side of a cheap platoon. I have no problem paying him 4 million for that role.

Yep, he's fine in that role, i have no confidence Snit employs him in that role, however.

I think the buyout money goes to 2019's payroll, but AA better make good use of that money.

what makes you think he'll be used that way tho? he hasn't been at any point, for even a second, with Snit.

Shifting $4M from the 2020 payroll to the 2019 payroll seems like an attempt to play with internal accounting numbers. Seems pointless, but there must be a reason. Regardless, we can mark Flowers and Markakis down for $4M in our spreadsheets for 2020 payroll.

With Snit at the helm, this almost certainly means the everyday OF is going to be Acuna/Ender/Markakis with Duvall as the 4th OFer. While $4M for Markakis is good value, his presence represents one less position in the field to place an impact bat.

If the Braves miss out on Grandal and have to check down to someone like Castro or Avila, the only place for an impact bat is 3b. After JD declines the QO, it will cost the Braves a pick in the 30s to sign him. That means checking down to Mous.

An offseason that consists of a non-Grandal C and Mous isn’t going to inspire a lot of confidence. The rest of the payroll will likely be spread around to the bench, a SP of some sort, and a large chunk saved for whoever ends up being 2020’s DK.

Assuming Folty, Greene, Duvall, Jackson, Cukberson, Camargo, and Dayton projected arbitration salaries are right and all are brought back (and Julio isn't), payroll should be around $86.1 million as of today. If AA plans to platoon Duvall/Riley with Markakis, don't you just about have to go after Grandal and Moose first. That pushes you to around $115-$120 million. See how the pitching market looks after making the bats your first priorities and maybe you get lucky with one of the second-tier SPs having a soft market.

I have no idea how he'll be used. Just saying that bringing him back as a role player for $4 million is fine.

One thing that could force Snit's hand is roster construction. If we add another stud outfielder, two of the three spots will be full. If you have a right hander that kills lefties as well, even Snit might be hard pressed to put Markakis in there every day.

Off-season now shapes up as follows. We will spend on 2 or these three needs and go cheap on the third: 3rd base, catcher and starting pitcher.

Declining Teheran's option increases the chances we give Newk another chance in the rotation.

We probably still can't get both Grandal and Donaldson.

But I think Grandal and Moose is now a realistic possibility.

Can always make a trade for someone with a big salary. But if there's no C/3B upgrade, i'd be pretty interested what AA is planning on doing to fix the offense.

We could maybe do JD and Grandal, but probably couldnt do a whole lot else.

Julio's option declined, and JD offered a QO.

Julio deal gives us a little more wiggle room.

Current rotation is probably Folty/Fried/Soroka, and one of Wright/Touki/Newk/Wilson, and a FA SP. And Ian Anderson called up if he's the goods.
