Official Offseason Thread

Something is a little odd about the Flowers transaction.

I definitely read it as he will be receiving the same amount of money as he would have had they exercised the option.

The move is being made for accounting purposes.

My question is what is the accounting purpose?

It would matter for the luxury tax. Is there anything else on the MLB level where it would matter?

If they are doing this to get around some kind of internal payroll cap, it seems a little silly.

It could be that the payout from declining the option is counted against 2019 payroll.

It is an extra 2 million, who knows what it could be for. Every dollar counts for a team like the Braves.

I don’t think he saved any money. The Braves paid the $2M buyout and then signed him to a $4M deal that exactly matches the amount the option cost anyways.

What it did was make Flowers’ $6M salary only count as $4M towards the salary cap, but I have no idea why the Braves would care about that. Should we start rumors about this being a sign the Braves are about to boost payroll to levels where the salary cap starts to matter?

If he is making the same amount of money then this may be the most pointless transaction of the entire offseason.

Or
The Braves could be signing Cole and Rendon the need the luxury tax space.

Since the technical support forum is dead, is anybody else getting random pop ups from here? I’m getting them on my iPhone.

Is it possible that Braves simply paid out the $4M buyout money out of the extra income generated in Oct playoff revenues. Playing with IRS?

Markakis re-signed for 1 year/$4 million

Same situation as Flowers.

It's fine if he's platooned, i have zero confidence that happens under Snit. Maybe AA has a talk with Snit to tell him that more often.

Now what happens with Julio? I would decline it, but ya never know.

I hope Markakis is a bench bat bc he’s just not a starter at this point. LH off the bench? So we trimmed 4 million off the payroll so far right? What’s the point unless AA is planning to bring in 2 big contracts? Fingers crossed for JD and Grandal.

He should be a platoon player with Riley/Duvall.

May be doing so let's them count it towards the 2019 payroll? I'm not sure.

Markakis is a perfectly legitimate option as a bat off the bench or as the left handed side of a cheap platoon. I have no problem paying him 4 million for that role.
