Braves sign Mart to 2 year deal

With the new 26 man roster a team is only allowed a maximum of 13 pitchers.

And we’re also entering into the new rule that a pitcher must face at least 3 batters before being pulled. So maybe stocking up on strong bullpen arms isn’t a bad move since we won’t be able to have a true LOOGY anymore.

Since Snit absolutely, 100% refused to ever use any pitcher as a LOOGY, this makes no difference to us whatsoever.

He could always find a way, but it's going to be a whole hell of a lot harder for Snit to screw up BP matchups with a dominant pen.

Your post provoked a series of thoughts which aren't entirely a response to what you have put here, but I'm quoting you anyway.

At the fear of drawing fire for making a list, this still helps me:

1. Soroka
2. Fried
3. Folty
4. SP4
5. SP5

6. Melancon RHP
7. Smith LHP
8. Greene RHP
9. Martin RHP
10. Newcomb LHP
11. Jackson RHP
12. O'Day RHP
13. Long Reliever?

Minors:

Minter LHP, Dayton LHP, Sobotka RHP, Walker RHP, Webb RHP, Pfeiffer LHP

Minor League Starters: Anderson RHP, Wright RHP, Davidson LHP, Wilson RHP, Weigel RHP, De La Cruz RHP, Touissant RHP, Ynoa RHP, Muller LHP.

..........

If Newcomb is in the rotation, that would seem to promote Minter back into the Majors if he looks like he has it in Spring Training. It seems to me that lefties out of the pen that can get right handed hitters out are going to be something of an additional premium with the new three batter rule, which I think maybe makes Smith's signing look even a little better as far as managing loads, if not salary.

I can sort of see why people think Greene will be non-tendered or traded, but I guess I don't quite understand the point of signing Martin to cut Greene. Martin was only slightly better than Green if you could even say that definitively and figures to be about the same price with less commitment. And he didn't end the season on the DL.

But, I would think that a one year commitment of 7m to Greene is a moveable asset. Perhaps one with some value given the Braves did give up something to get him. But I sort of like the depth of this pen and I would think the Braves do too.

It's not hard to see that payroll is going up. It's been the plan for a while now once the results of operations came in the past 3 fiscal years.

I could see a slight uptick in payroll, but with the bullpen adds, I could also see us heavily involved in trade discussions this offseason. AA now has had 2 years to evaluate the talent in the system and knows who he wants to give up

Yes, if you call every single SP prospect a future TOR guy, and declare every single year that payroll is going up, eventually you will be “right”.

Our ownership has given us plenty of reason over the years to doubt their word when they say they're going to raise payroll. Now, this time, I think it must be true (or AA has gone mad), but that doesn't invalidate that there are reasons to be suspicious of their word.

I've been a long time doubter of payroll increases. After 15 years of being stagnant the payroll has started to move up the last few years. Still the ranks are below average which is sad. Hopefully we are now seeing another significant bump (like we did 3 years ago) to push the Braves in the top half of payroll in the league. Would make things a lot easier.

The only reason I'm inclined to believe there might actually be a real increase in payroll is because of the Battery revenue. This isn't just a new stadium for the Braves, the Braves are now a real estate company as well. The Battery is an impressive development and I can see it really increasing revenue for the Braves.

And you said that 2 months ago - don't anyone think he didn't scoop everyone.

You realize you’re the only person on this board who refers to ideas you thought about in the past, right?

You’re the only person on this board who seems to care to let everyone know you mentioned something a few weeks ago. So not exactly sure what you’re trying to accomplish here

If anything, I think these moves show that AA feels he made a miscalculation (I doubt he calls them mistakes) with the bullpen early last year, and he is determined not to do the same this year. I hope that does not mean he will overcompensate with the bullpen and make his "miscalculations" elsewhere.

Honestly with the rosters expanding and the dearth of relievers available that were "above average" last year I'd think he's looking ahead at a talent crunch and getting guys in house we know have solid track records (even though they can be volatile) because if you thought there were bad pens last year, then adding another AAA guy isn't going to help the talent pool.

Also them having to face 3 guys is going to expose some RP big time.

Does Luke Jackson have trade value? 3 years of control and a pretty good RP with velocity...

I think we're making the big trade this year. Lindor?

To be clear I'm not saying we swap Jackson in the Lindor package. I wonder if there are a lot of wheeler dealer moves. Big moves for a big guy. Maybe move guys like Jackson to upgrade elsewhere.

It certainly seems like a big trade is inevitable...but we all thought the same thing last year.

I'm struggling to see a path towards filling all the gaping holes on the roster with championship caliber talent without AA making at least one significant trade to bring in a chunk of cheap (in terms of $$) wins.

Of course, I was convinced a rotation of Folty, Gaus, Soroka, Wright and Julio was going to be all the Braves needed last year, so who knows.

happy we will be having a Martin on the team for two more years?

Chance sisco. Need a catcher. Lefty hitter. Control. Baltimore drafted a college catcher number 1. Baltimore needs pitching. Maybe move some touki type players since sisco hasn’t hit much yet. Better player and a touki type guy with Alex Jackson. AJ could play a year in Baltimore.

I think they go hard after lindor. Might need a third team though...would the Indians want dansby? Try to sell lindor on playing long term with Ozzie and acuna.

I’d also look at all pirates of, whit merrifield and Haniger.

Anyone think the looming strike will impact trades and years of control?

The looming strike and looming adoption of the DH in the NL will exactly offset each other in terms of impact on trades.
