Official Offseason Thread

I don’t know how much we have to spend.

To me it makes sense to front load the deal.

30/30/20 with a team option for 20 in year 4 with a 5 to ten million buy out.

Doesn’t that work for everyone if we can afford 30 million this year? I know it’s a lot and there is risk. I’d rather have given 35 to rendon. Pray for dh.

I also figured the absolute top of market for JD would be something like 3/75 with a 4th year option that makes the deal either 3/80+ or 4/100. Now I have no idea what teams are willing to throw at these aging players again.

Still holding out hope the Cubs are willing to trade Bryant for Riley and a couple MiLB arms.

A reasonable valuation for Donaldson on a 4 year deal is to price him for 3 WAR per year. Something along the lines of 4, 3, 3, 2.

Going rate is 8-9M per win. 4 years 100M is NOT unreasonable.

Or course I'd rather the Braves be able to sign him for 3 years 75M. That would be a good deal for the club. Remains to be seen if it happens.

I'd be willing to offer my body to Donaldson if he'd take a 3 year 50 million dollar deal. He'd get 48 hours, no holes barred.

Nobody ever say I'm not a team player.

'm all aboard giving JD a 4th year if that's what it takes but IF we do lose out on him I keep coming back to one team and trade that could/would solve our issues...

Trading for Seager and Haniger would give us what we need and I don't think would cost as much as Bryant or Arenado.

Could give us a lineup that looks something like:

Acuna
Albies
Freeman
Haniger
Seager
TDA
Markakis/Ender
Swanson

The only way i will like a trade like that is if they add Marco Gonzales.

Wait, who bats against lefties in a Markakis/Ender platoon? That doesn't work at all.

I presume you wouldn't platoon Markakis and Ender. Duvall, Acuna, and Haniger would play against LHP mostly.

I still don't like the idea of a Seager/Haniger trade though.

Agreed....if we make those two moves, this team is stacked. Maybe you get a Taijuan Walker to come be 5th starter, or can get a decent #5 via trade for cheap

With options coming off the board, and the holidays quickly coming to an end, you have to figure AA needs to make a move one way or the other in the coming days. This is dragging out too long. Either you can offer him the amount of years he wants (4) or you can’t. If you can he would have signed by now. And if you can’t then you can’t let his game of chicken hold you hostage. Sign or move on to plan B before plan B is gone.

I'm pretty confident that the Donaldson signing is closely linked with Bryant's grievance. Once that gets cleared up, I expect the wheels to start turning quickly. Its possible that Donaldson signs sooner than that, but it feels like teams are less likely to commit to him when that other option is still a bit ambiguous.

It’s interesting bc you have to know how many years of KB you’re getting to properly value him and what prospects you’d send to the Cubs.

But I’d imagine JD at 4/100 let’s say is better value than KB at 2/50 + prospects...unless the prospects aren’t Pache/Anderson/Waters.

But we don’t know if we get KB for 1 or 2 years and we don’t know what the Cubs want back.

There is such a small chance that grievance will win that I would risk trading for Bryant now. Maybe see if you could trade for 1.8 years of KB and assume full responsibility.

If we got KB and Ozuna then we don’t need to buy a number five. We have plenty of those and I would rather save our money and prospects and let the season unfold to see what we need at the deadline.

This was my position a few days ago, but i was looking at it only through the lens of the Braves acquiring either player. It’s obviously possible several teams need to know Bryant’s situation before they commit a max offer to JD, so it would be wise for JD to wait until the Bryant situation is resolved.
