Official Offseason Thread

For other teams it’s not just his age but they lose a pick at the same time and at his age I just don’t see him getting a 4/110 offer from anybody.

If we don’t sign JD, and the asking price for KB or Arenado are too much, how does everyone feel about Ozuna or Castellanos being our “big bat” for the offseason?

Well, alcohol is truly unnecessary and who got ----faced the worst is nothing to brag about.

It's my opinion, drinking alcohol serves no useful purpose at all other than to burn hard-earned money. I acquired this opinion from my late grandfather who beat alcoholism in the 1970s. I made him a promise in the early 90s not to drink and I haven't and I won't. It was an easy promise to make and an even easier one to keep when its made to someone you truly love and would give anything to have back as long as they would be healthy and without cancer that took them.

can i get a list of necessary/useful things etc from ya?

just curious cause the amount of necessary things is like 4 things really

when it comes down to it

Doubtful after what they asked the Nats for. Donaldson and his high price tag is going to be less than any prospects we have to trade for KB or Arenado. I’m afraid if we don’t sign JD we’ll likely add something small and not terribly exciting like Castellanos. Sigh.

I view Bowman as more of a press secretary than a journalist. And that's not a knock on Bowman as I think that's pretty much his job. Although now that I think about it, most journalists have become press secretaries.

I always find the contrast between the beat writers in Atlanta and here in NYC interesting. Atlanta beat writers always seem to act cordial in an attempt to appease the team and not ruffle any feathers. NYC beat writers will say whatever they want for headlines no matter the consequences.

southern culture vs yankee culture

Quite frankly, as a former journalist, neither approach is the best, but Atlanta beat writers flat-out suck at their jobs. Young Gabe and Kevin McAlpin are probably my favorites of the bunch, though I'm not sure how much of a straight journalist McAlpin really is.

NYC journalists are just like the NYC culture.

It is what it is. I think the benefit there is that Nick finally moves full time to the bench where he belongs. The HUGE hope is that Riley takes a big step forward this season to fill the void at 3rd (assuming Castellanos plays LF).

McAlpin was just on Hot Stove and mentioned they'd still like to add another RH SP to the mix - I'd think most folks would just as soon let the young arms fight it out, but we all likely agree that you can't have too much pitching.

One of those "wily veterans with postseason experience that could potentially help the young kids" we haven't mentioned is Clay Buchholz.

Definitely not sexy, but could probably give you a Julio-type guy for a couple million bucks (or less) on a split deal if he still wants to pitch.

Sounds like Archer and Marte would fit if JD doesn't sign.

Archer is a fascinating target. Pirates would clearly be selling low and there is some risk involved, but Pitt is one of the worst teams in the league at developing pitching at the big league level. At the right price, the potential reward is high enough to mitigate the risk. I just don't know that the Pirates will sell him at his lowest point, and truly they'd be better off seeing if he can rebound in the 1st half of 2020 and selling him at the deadline.

He seemed to mean that they're still interested in adding another arm regardless of what happens with Donaldson. I would assume the same still goes for a backup SS and possibly a LH bench bat.

Just a guess, but the LH bat probably has to wait until the Donaldson saga concludes - if AA winds up having to pivot to Ozuna or Castellanos (or even something like the trade you mention), Markakis becomes that guy. Otherwise there doesn't seem to be much of a reason not to have already worked out fairly cheap deals to bring Joyce and Hechavarria back.

Ideally the Donaldson numbers would work out in that $80-$90 million range - if that were the case, AA could probably add Joyce, Hechavarria, AND a Buchholz/Andrew Cashner type for less than the $100 million we were worried Donaldson would cost by himself.

Another potentially interesting name to me is Collin McHugh - still misses a lot of bats and would be great as a swingman if one of the young guys steps forward. He's likely to get more money from someone than the kind of guy they're looking at for that role though. Of course it's starting to get late and some of these guys may be beginning to feel a bit antsy too.

If we can upgrade COF I hope they don’t let Markakis stand in the way of it. He’s a bench bat at this point imo. Nobody is gonna meet JD’s asking price. I doubt he has a 100 million on the table right now. His age just scares people.

Grabbing JD and NC off the free agent market would really stack this offense. Neck could still get 350-400 abs if twit deploys that lineup correctly. FF, JD and NC all should start less than 150 games imo. I would rest Ender probably the same since he seems to have leg issues.

He's never going to rebound as long as they keep pushing him throw his worst pitch (in fact, one of the worst pitches in baseball) more and more often. And it doesn't appear their coaching brain-trust is smart enough to figure that out, somehow.

I’d like to add NC to but we haven’t heard one rumor of him to us but AA works pretty quite so who knows. The offense would be loaded though.
