Official Offseason Thread

Live chat with Steve Adams at MLBTR going on right now. Had this to say regarding Senzel:

On the flood of Nick Senzel questions I'm receiving:

I think it's likeliest that the Reds keep him.
I don't think they'd move him unless they were getting an immediate upgrade to a weak point on the roster (shortstop, catcher)
The Reds aren't shopping him/desperate to move him, and nothing has characterized their feelings toward him as such.
If you're putting Kyle Seager, Brandon Belt or any type of unwanted contract in the hypothetical deal, you're almost certainly off base on the type of arrangement to which they'd be open.

So yeah, anyone thinking a trade with Ender and prospects makes sense for them is being pretty foolish.

Senzel is damn good. correct: he'd only be used to help land a big fish at a position of need. they aren't hoping to move him because actually he stinks.

So the Astros are moving on from "we'll do almost anything to win" to "let's see if Greinke, McCullers, and Verlander can each pitch 486 innings this season!"

They have Urquidy, Whitley, and some others but i think they trade for a SP before the year or sign one to a 1 year deal.

That was a Dusty joke. Three-man rotation , 9 innings every night, okay, fine, I'll carry one reliever for extra inning games!

Astros are an analytical ran team. Dont think he'd be there except for being a manager before.

It is sounding like Mookie is gonna get dealt, Dodgers/Pads most likely teams.

@LouMerloni
says the #Redsox offered Mookie Betts a 10 years, $300M deal in the 2019 offseason. Mookie countered with 12 years, $420M

I don't doubt Mollie could get 10-12 years around 350 million. I doubt he sees close to 400 though, unless like the Nats do, it's deferred.

He'll be 28 next free agency, he can get to 10 years. He'll probably top Harper's deal, dont think he's getting near Trout money.

I think he gets around 10/350 to 360.

He ain't damn good yet. He was almost just as bad as Riley his rookie year

90 wRC+

i should have said damn valuable. regardless, he doesn’t have the same issues Riley had. his are less concerning IMO. and will be a better defender. comparing the wRC+ with no other context doesn’t mean much.

Okay, what about their last stints in AAA?

2019 AAA for Riley:
10.3 BB% 20.1 K% 146 wRC+ in 194 plate appearances

2018 AAA for Senzel:
9.8 BB% 20.2 K% 149 wRC+ in 193 plate appearances

And as far as defense, that was always supposed to be Senzel's issue. Seems most agree that Riley has turned into an average to slightly above average defender.

Not sure what context you're looking for exactly... Senzel's 90 wRC+ was in 414 plate appearances. Quite a large sample and still 10% below average.

For the record, I'm not big on Riley but Senzel is very overrated.

I am excited to see what Riley can bring to the team next year. He was so young and just couldn’t adjust quick enough but he always came out strong his second trip through a league. I agree he starts in AAA but I doubt he will stay down long.

lordy.
Senzel was a 60FV and Riley was a 55FV. i feel this gap has grown, as i'd keep Senzel the same and move Riley down a bit based on his issues.
Senzel has a better minor league track record.
Riley came up and K'd 36.4% of the time with a 5.4% BB rate. his issue were/are absolutely glaring.
Senzel came up and and K'd 24.4% of the time. that difference is enormous. 7.2% BB rate...also a good bit better, especially compared with the K-rate.
Senzel is a better defender. i'm not sure that's debatable. perhaps it was a knock on him when drafted, but much like Riley, it's not anymore, but he's still a better defender who will also help more on the base paths.
Riley's wRC+ is heavily thrown off by his very unsustainable hot start. once pitchers found his weak spots he was getting eaten alive pretty much every single AB. Senzel didn't have nearly the same degree of problems.
IMO Riley's issue(s) is/are glaring and no one knows if it's something he can really fix. he's completely guessing up at the plate and pitchers know it. Senzel doesn't have the same kind of issue. Senzel is a better, more valuable piece.
so all of that is context you're leaving out.

Market value is about halfway between the Sox offer and the counter. On a 10 year deal about 350M. On a 12 year deal about 380M. It would make sense for Mookie to negotiate this with the Sox. I wonder about the relationship between the Sox and him.
