Bravos acquire C-Doumit from Twins for Gilmartin.

Gilmartin has been passed by Hale, Martin, Northcraft and others. He means absolutely nothing to this organization and his ceiling is a back of the rotation innings eater AT BEST. This is a great move to get a great bat for the bench.

This was in reference to you saying it could open the door to trading Gattis.

If they trade Gattis I can only assume a Laird/Doumit platoon or they go with Bethancourt out the gate. Gattis has more value because he's already got a full season under his belt with plenty of homeruns. Bethancourt is still a prospect.

What exactly is wrong with Laird as a backup? He's not Ross but solid.

He isn't solid. When everything goes right for him at the plate, he is what we saw this year, which wasn't all that much. And he can't catch. There is really nothing to like about Laird.

Laird brings the Brian Jordan veteran leadership that Hudson and McCann left. (I'm semi-joking).

What makes you think he's anything more than a bat for the bench, similar to the role Hinske had for us? Not seeing the downside here.

Gilmartin had a 2.8 FIP going into last year, selling your pitching prospects off their worst year for a bench bat with concussions issues isn't really a good practice.

I agree about Laird, not sure what he does that any old catcher couldn't do. Bring Blanco back!

With home plate collisions being outlawed soon he won't have to worry about it. Gilmartin was expendable.

It is pretty charitable to call Doumit a catcher, sure he plays the position. But he is as bad as they come at doing so. He is the worst at pitch framing and just plain bad defensively overall too. He is also bad defensively at first and in the outfield. Probably the safest position to start him (when you do so) is left field, though the Twins started him in right field. Further, I am low on Gilmartin and said a year ago we ought to trade him before he loses all value. At least we were able to get something for him. Plus they probably wanted to move him to make room for better prospects.

Doumit has the potential to really help off the bench, but my fear is that Fredi will have him catching and playing right field too much. But if we just use him in left occasionally and as emergency catcher, then it could work out okay if he hits enough.

Our 1st rounder from just two years ago nets us a bench guy for one year. I hated the pick then, and the end of his time as a Brave proves it was pretty much a whiff of a 1st round pick.

That said, though Doumit has regressed quite a bit over the past couple years, he should still be a very good bench guy who can play catcher, 1st base and the corner outfield positions, plus is a switch hitter. Should really improve our bench. I wonder how this affects Laird, Terd and Gamel.

They already said Gattis will start.

Well we certainly have a much better bench this year with Gamel and Doumit. And a third catcher so Fredi hopefully won't be afraid to pinch hit Gattis when Gattis isn't starting.

Leave it to people here to complain about trading a guy who would be lucky to be a #5 to get a good bench bat back. Gilmartin will be lucky to be a long reliever in this league. It was a miss on a draft pick. Acknowledge it and move on.

Yeah, I think this is the organization acknowledging that they missed on Gilmartin and moving on. He isn't anything important to us.

Doumit likely provides more value off the bench this year than Gilmartin ever would for our major league squad.

I don't think Doumit will play much catcher unless there is an injury or someone turns into a pumpkin. But he will be a very useful pinch hitter. His presence will also allow Fredi to use Gattis as a pinch hitter when he isn't starting. Plus we now have our DH for interleague and the WS.
