Bravos acquire C-Doumit from Twins for Gilmartin.

I could see this:

Laird C

Doumit C/LF/RF

Pena SS/2B/3B

Gamel 1B/3B

Schafer OF

I'd honestly switch out Schafer for Terdo if I were making the bench right now. Yeah, Schafer has speed and can play CF, but, Terdo can play IF and OF and we would have Heyward and BJ to both play center if the other gets injured in a game, and could call up Schafer or Constanza afterwards. So basically, I'd go:

Laird C

Doumit C/LF/RF

Pena SS/2B/3B

Gamel 1B/3B

Terdoslavich IF/OF

Not as much speed with Schafer not on the bench, but, a lot of PH/defensive replacement flexibility. With how our team is built, I think that is more important than speed.

Baffling ... I don't like this deal.

It's a huge discount on a cheap, cost-controlled pitcher -- especially in this market.

I would've taken Gilmartin over Jason Vargas, who just got $8MM per year.

If Gamel is healthy and plays to anywhere near his capability, I agree completely.

 This response is baffling. A guy in Gilmartin who's gotten lit up in the minors, never thrown a pitch in the majors, and has below average stuff. What good is a cost controlled pitcher that isn't any good?

Best case scenario is a 5th starter but he's most likely a long reliever or situational lefty. You realize righties hit .331 against him this year.

Especially left handed pitchers

Gilmartin had a 2.8 FIP coming into the year....he was one of our top prospects and then he has a bad 90 innings and now he's worth Ryan Doumit, lol.

Medlen
Minor
Teheran
Beachy
Wood
Floyd
Hale
Martin
Northcraft
Graham

There are a minimum of 10 SP's ahead of him on the depth chart. With many more coming. I'd rather have Freddy Garcia in our rotation this year then Gilmartin. He was only briefly considered a prospect because of where he was drafted.

I think it will be Gamel taking the last bench spot. Terdo is not needed with Doumit and might be used for trade bait.

I'm curious what Terdo could get us. Not much of a need right now with Doumit and Gamel. Definitely some teams out there that could use him.

Who cares who is ahead of him? We couldn't have traded him for something else? Have him as the 3rd piece with CB and Wood for a Price or Sale? Once again, I don't care about Gilmartin but the fact that we sold so low and traded him for Ryan freakin Doumit will never make sense to me.

I've been tied up at work since news of the trade broke and haven't chimed in yet. I've been as critical as anyone of Frank Wren this off-season but in this case, he made a good deal. It's a power threat from both sides of the plate and gives you flexibiltiy position wise, and also allows Fredi to use Gattis as a pinch hitter on the days he's not catching, and the price negligible because Gilmartin was way done the pecking order for Braves pitchers. Good move, now I think the only we will see now is O'Flaherty resigned, unless there is a surprise trade.

Of course it doesn't make sense to you. That doesn't mean it wasn't a fair trade. Im sure wren and his team had a bulletin board of utility guys for bench they made calls and this is who they were after. Im sure they had another bulletin board with minor leaguers they could part with and Gilmartin was lower on the chart which made him expendable.

Wren has decided with us being a mid market team, to maximize your 162 you're going to need a lot of ramiro penas, omar infante, Prado, Gattis, Doumit guys that can play multiple positions. These guya are going to be important since we can't buy a big bat and yhe the fact we're stuck with BJ and Dan.

PLEASE stop citing the fact that Doumit can play multiple positions, he's a HORRIBLE defender, everywhere he plays. Ok you win, trading our #4 Prospect coming into last year for 200 AB's of Ryan Doumit is a GREAT move.

I didn't say it was a great move, I said it was a fair trade.

You know why we can't just trade for utility guys that are great defenders? Because other teams already realize their value and don't want to GET RID OF THEM.

We have a surplus of pitching, we had a need at bench. Do the math. Stop being ridiculous.

We traded Tommy Hanson who put up solid numbers and got Jordan Walden who was struggling the season before we traded for him to where he was demoted from Angels closer. We sold low on Hanson according to many, and ended up getting a strong set up guy who ha da great season until his injury.

Not saying Doumit is going to make us look good, but we made a fair trade. If Wren trades Gilmartin, Wood, CB, and another spect in a deal a lot of you on here are going to be saying he overpaid and could've dealt Wood or Gilmartin separately to fill needs in other areas.

I think people are giving Gilmartin to much credit. No "expert" see him as anything special and yes I would have rather traded a RP like Lamm or Gerrian for Doumit, losing Gilmartin isn't the end of the world.

He was our 4th best prospect because our farm system was/is week. Very week.

So what is Gilmartin worth to those who think we sold low on him?

Who cares what number he was rated in our system....look at the actual player. The 15th rated prospect in one organization could have a brighter future then the #4 prospect at another. The bottom line is that this trade will never hurt us. Gilmartin might end up being a decent 5th starter somewhere down the line which is fine. But we have plenty of guys in our organization who project to do just as much or more then Gilmartin and this fills a big need for the team. Our team is ABSOLUTELY better after making this trade and there is no risk involved in losing a possible impact player down the road. Nobody is calling Doumit our savior or anything more than a really good piece to have for the bench. But I really like having him.

It amazes me what people think about our starting pitching prospects. Not everyone is going to turn into an actually above avg starting pitcher. No Gilmartin could not do better or equal to what Vargas would do.
