I need to vent on this Duck Dynasty "Controversy".

Well I don't know about Fitty, but I seem to be falling behind in my responsibilities given the number of people who don't seem to know what's going on....:Wall:

Be careful Hawk, if you start informing our kids on current events and news they're too lazy to find out about, you might be labeled as an extreme LIBERAL PROFESSOR indoctrinating our kids to socialist and communist ideas. :eusa_dance:

Well seeing as how all you have to do to get labeled a LIBERAL/SOCIALIST/MARXIST for some people (including a couple of our old friends from Scout and maybe here too) is to question their god of unfettered capitalism where everyone is considered to be on a level playing field, especially those with the resources to be on Mt Everest in comparison to their competition AND all you have to do to be considered a RIGHT WING/BIGOT/CLOSE MINDED NEANDERTHAL is to say only "politically popular speech" should be considered free speech and anything that doesn't fit neatly into their little ideals of what is/isn't OK to say should qualify as some sort of discriminatory hate speech, I seem to be screwed either way, don't I???

You're trying too hard to be a common ground, middle of the spectrum centrist.

Come on home baby. In this political climate, you're basically left of center, considering how far the right, the right has gone the last 5 years.

I'll be happy to give you a ride.:Bunchie1:

Thanks for the offer, I appreciate it, but it's more fun (and sometimes more dangerous) to be in the middle, after all I get to take pot shots at both sides that way!!!

Also, I'm not sure I'd say the right has too far right, I'd say they've just gone (generally speaking) off the effing deep end. Any time you actually look up to total and complete wastes of space and DNA like Ted Cruz and/or Michelle Bachman as your leaders/role models, I'm not sure there is any real hope for you, period... I told our Repub friends about 10 years ago what was going on with their party and how they "needed a come to Jesus meeting" but they tended to disagree, especially since most of those effing morons think they already do speak for Jesus, why on Earth would they listen to me, when they're making millions by mimicking the old Scribes and Pharisees from the New Testament??

Beer, rips, tricks, dicks, crunky music, Paul Robeson, and Jesus? Who wouldn't be on board with that?

[puts glasses on]

Oh.

I've never watched it either. It's apparently big here in Indiana, shock I know.
Can honestly say I've never watched Duck Dynasty, Honey Boo Boo, Octo Mom, John & Kate Plus 8, ever.

I have watched Hardcore Pawn. But really the only reality show I've ever watched was Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson because it was kind of a new thing in American television back then... it was also the transition of MTV going from Music to music part time, to music never. Oh and Bam's TV Show was pretty solid, just for Don Vito.

I'd expect a ringing endorsement of A&E's right to enforce their contract.

Good thing you got your crew to come "thank you" for that amazing burn…

But I wasn't speaking to the legality of their decision. I'm speaking to the stupidity of it. But "thanks"

I actually watched about 5-10 minutes of one episode one time and that was literally all I could take. About the only thing I'll say in their actual defense is that they seem to be really pro-family and that's something I completely agree with. Other than that, they're about as entertaining as watching paint dry.

I'm in a kind of lazy mood. Should I read this whole thread before posting my thoughts?

Cause I mean, I've got thoughts about this brouhaha.

Sav's opening post is so long. Not sure if I want to read it, much less what the rest of you jokers posted.

Here's a hint - I think everybody involved is off, one angle or another.

The term "devout Christian" gets over used, unless identifying really strongly with your own tribe counts.

What's wring with just not watching the show if you don't agree with the guy? Let the free market work. If people don't like it, they won't watch and it'll be cancelled.

How many *** and lesbians do you think watch that show? Probably very little. If A&e didn't suspend the guy do you think the show would lose many viewers? No. But it is the most watched reality show of all time. I think the family will quit soon and then A&e is going to lose a **** load of advertising money. All that because of people who don't even watch the show

Okay, well, let's start with Phil. First, his actual words.

1. His crassness was not helpful. But, you better believe it, it resonates with many guys without same-sex-attraction. Nevertheless, not helpful Phil and easily critiqued.

2. Putting slippery slope reasoning into such statements makes your opposition go ballistic, bat-****e crazy. Course that doesn't mean there is never a place for such.

3. He paraphrased 1 Cor. fairly well and included more than just homosexuality. So I give him good marks for that.

4. He never says he hates homosexuals, actually within context he says "...we just lov'm and…" tell them about Jesus & let God do the judging (meaning ultimate judgment). Now, you might want to define "love" differently than him, but I wouldn't define "love" as approval, which many seem to demand.

Second, his wisdom, or lack thereof - several options.

1. He was naive to think he could say what he did (no matter how he framed it) to GQ and it wouldn't cause a firestorm. Reading comments he's made before, and hearing segments from him from time to time, I doubt this is a correct view. He's far sharper than the backwoods routine and demeanor might lead you to think.

2. He knew and didn't care, with no regard to how it would affect him, his family or the show, because he sees his role as being somewhat that of a prophet. Maybe. I tend to think he's like that because he thinks a thing needs to be said. Agree or disagree with what he thinks is right or wrong, etc., but I could see him thinking that such needs to be said. I'd be interested to see if he said this after the news out of CO recently about the suit against the baker.

3. He knew and said what he did because he's actually a marketing genius. Could be this as well - particularly how marketable their brand actually is. But this is a more cynical view…

Oh, sorry about the length of the above. ;-)

Next, A&E. Here are the options in my mind:

1. Hypocrites. Yep, they hire these guys, promote these guys knowing full well the views they espouse, because it makes lots of cha-ching for them. Then they go and fire the guy for saying the sort of thing these guys say. Yep.

2. Stupid. Duck Dynasty is their duck that lays the golden egg. It is the number 1 show in cable history. Are these guys idiots or what? That beholding to the LGBT audience that they kill the duck?

3. Principled. They truly are willing to kill the duck because they think it the right thing to do not matter what it does to their network. Entertainment industry and principled? - Call me jaded, but I say highly doubtful.

3. Marketing geniuses? Will they bring him back, giving him more of a platform? I doubt this too.

Btw, A&E are perfectly in their rights to terminate an employee on what they deem a breach of contract.

Third, those who cry "freedom of speech." Not so fast Kemosahbee. So long as they don't fine him or put him in jail, I think we are okay on this front.

Fourth, those who deride those who scream "freedom of speech." Not so fast Kemosahbee. If you are honest then you need to at least acknowledge that while some one might not be fined or put in jail for saying something like he did, the power of the government wielded through the FCC, or the IRS, or through state law or codes, is beginning to affect those who hold the positions he holds. Consider the baker in CO, the photographer in NM, etc. And also have the honesty to acknowledge that those like GLAD will keep pushing companies and government against those who don't give their public approval of LGBT POV.
