2020 Trade Deadline Thread

Something odd happened during Gausman's time with the Braves, and I would be surprised if AA wants to go there again.

i'm not sure why dumped him is in quotes. they DFA'd him, that's dumping a guy.
i don't think they had a ton of starters. Wilson was getting starts around that time.

I wish we could revisit game threads from around that time, because I'm pretty sure many on here were calling for him to get let go.

He was getting absolutely rocked. In his last 6 starts as a Brave before he was released, he gave up 31 runs in 26 IP. Sure, his FIP said he should have done a bit better, but it's not like he was doing a solid job.

No doubt.

Everybody's shaking the trees to try to find anyone that can give them 5 innings that they don't have to give up a lot of value for, so the criteria you mentioned is spot on - and fits with Gausman as well - even though it would seem odd to bring him back. If they could get him for a prospect that doesn't actually fit in to the plans and he's making less than an Eovaldi/Cobb/Cueto, AA probably has to at least consider it. EVERY GM is going to be expected to pinch as many pennies as is absolutely possible this week.

As an aside, there was an earlier mention this morning on The Network that Liberty has restructured some of the team's debt and that pointed to some that they're willing to let AA take on more salary. Can't link the report since I only heard the tail-end of it, but that's at least somewhat encourging. IIRC it was Morosi that said it - maybe someone has time enough to dig about that, I can't until later this evening...heading out the door right now.

They had to restructure that debt as they were dangerously close to breaking the contract on that debt. By restructuring it and pushing it out further, it just gets them into compliance with said debt agreement. Really doesn’t open any additional funds for the Braves right now. In all actuality, more likely signals that the Braves have even less money to play with as they can’t even make payments on their debt currently and are going to have to pay hundreds of millions of dollars off in the next 2 years.

Our rotation really has gone almost as badly as humanly possible. Soroka tears his Achilles, Hamels hurts his arm, Hernandez opts out, and none of Newcomb, Touki, or Wright can step up. The only bright spot is the emergence of Fried.

The fact we're still in it with an almost total rotation collapse is pretty incredible. So trading for a starter is pretty much a must if we want to have a chance. Two would probably be better.

Pretty much all of this. Not to mention Acuna and Albies being out too. If we could get say Lynn or Clevinger then we could be dangerous and really dangerous next year when Soroka returns.

I think everyone should not count on soroka being back next year. He might be pitching but if we go through this offseason assuming soroka will be like he was, well that would be a huge failure. Soroka might not be fully back until 2022.

That's not really the time frame for Achilles injuries, but its entirely possible Soroka will never be as good as he was pre-injury.

That is what I mean. We need to assume soroka might not ever be back. If he does that is awesome.

Is there any history of pitchers coming back from this? Seems like there has to be

Read somewhere the Yankees are in talks with Cleveland. I wonder if that’s Lindor or pitching?

Watch them do what they always do....offer less than most and still somehow make the trade. Gawd I hate them

Adam Wainwright had that injury and was back the next year. He was decent, but is so much older...that wouldn’t be a great comp. Most believe he should fully recover because he is so young. It’s just questionable that he will be ready at the beginning of next season. Could be mid summer before he is effective.

Usually older guys have this. Kinda a bit rare for a younger pitcher

For sure expect AA to add a SP, it's basically a must. Will he add 2, or try for a package deal like a Seager/Walker to fill 2 holes. But it's amazing we are where we are given how bad of shape the rotation is.

Thanks - only heard the tail-end of that discussion. Of course Morosi and the other writers/sources automatically assumed that meant they were going to spend it on the trade market - acquiring someone with a higher salary.

if you have to bet you bet on AA getting the cheapest pitchers he can. Lots of guys on expiring deals who can be 1 WAR pitchers in a normal year. Low prospect cost.

Interesting to see how much he is thinking about playoffs. Playoffs are always a crap shoot. But if you go into a series with one pitcher and the other team has a good 1-2 or 1-2-3, that is going to be tough to win.

Is the platoon of Riley, Camargo, and some other weirdos good enough at third base? Can La Stella play third well enough?
