2020 Trade Deadline Thread

What would the equivalent for us be if we have offered the same? Did Padres overpay or get a deal?

I'm now hoping we go after Plesac. Less expensive and more years of control. What would it take?

Quantrill - probably slightly less valuable than Wright if Wright doesn't have some kind of breakthrough.
Hedges - probably similar to Langeliers if he doesn't hit.
Naylor - probably similar to Michael Harris except Harris is too far away to help them right away.
Cantillo - 45/MED...Muller - 45/HIGH
Arias - 40+/HIGH...Shewmake - 45/MED
Miller - 40/LOW...Grissom - 40/HIGH

Padres get Allen back - he's a less expensive Inciarte.

Will Braves shift gears and go big? Something to watch as the deadline approaches is if the Braves' posture adjusts. GM Alex Anthopoulos inherited a strong young core and top-notch farm system, but things have changed over the last few years. With international sanctions and a logjam of young talent in Triple-A and the big leagues, the lower levels of the system are almost devoid of significant prospect value while the upper level impact talent has been yo-yoed between Triple-A and the big leagues and lost value while they try to find footing.

The acquisition posture of this regime has been to make conservative, incremental upgrades, either trading second-tier prospects or taking on guaranteed money to add talent, but never pushing the chips to the middle. Will Anthopoulos choose to fill the gaping hole at starting pitcher by trading top prospect OF Drew Waters and thin out some of the upper-level prospect inventory, shifting the overall farm system into the bottom half of the league and betting on now? Or will he continue to try to tread water with smaller deals, trust the young talent will break through, and keep the competitive window as wide as possible, but at the expense of increasing his chances of a title in the short term? The question of how much payroll the club can add in 2020 and 2021 is also a factor now that wouldn't have mattered much pre-pandemic. -- Kiley McDaniel

Pretty good take by Kiley at ESPN.
Agree with most everything but it’s looking like we just don’t have any money

Interesting. Trade sim has Clevenger at a 38.4 value, and has Waters is at 40.9, so just Waters alone would have been an overpay and MORE than the Padres total package. So, I doubt Waters was ever even offered. Did not realize Waters value was that high.

According to the sim, Waters is the SIXTH most valueable player the Braves have (not just prospects but out of ALL Braves players).

1. Acuna - 250.9 (try putting that package together)
2. Albies - 124.9
3. Fried - 87.4
4. Pache - 69.4
5. Soroka - 67.9
6. Waters - 40.9
7. Anderson - 31.4

Who is (by far) our LEAST valuable trade asset?

Ender: -6.7

Padres won this deal to me and it’s not even that close unless the PTBN is someone special.

I'm willing to give AA a pass this year if he has an underwhelming deadline. We don't know what kind of financial restraints he's working under. Covid really hit the Braves finances hard. So hard they had to do some debt restructuring, IIRC.

I wouldn't be surprised if AA is working on a shoe string budget and so if we don't do a whole lot I wont hang too much on him.

The difference between AA and Preller is that Preller's the type to make an all-in push that makes the fans happy. He "won the offseason" right after he was hired, and they fell on their faces so hard it *amn-near cost him his job. They're still going to finish second in their division, and still have an uphill climb to get to the World Series - nothing they have done has made them the favorites to win anything. Are they better? Sure. Are they better than the Dodgers? Nope.

Those are the questions AA had to answer too. If you go nuts adding guys (even if you can make the money work somehow), are you going to be good enough to beat the Dodgers with "Ace", Fried, Anderson, and Hamels as your SPs? Probably not.

It sucks for fans, but it's the right play. Not adding a meh MOR guy like Minor, Boyd, or Cobb saves you money that might help you move (or even DFA) Ender this winter. There have been some reports that all but the richest teams are likely going to be looking to cut payroll by 20%-30% this winter. There are going to be a lot of veterans that will be DFAd because of the money crunch teams will face, and that means there are going to be lots of bargains out there if he can just be patient (and not do anything stupid) for a few more months.

I could see us getting Bundy. Lynn would be nice, but I imagine we would lose out to someone willing to pay up.

greg allen is not a cheaper ender...come on.

Take away Ender's career year when he came here and look at their last three seasons. Yes Ender's been hurt some, but he simply hasn't produced. With Pache and Waters so close, whose contract would you rather have - Allen's or Ender's.

I wish we could trade Ender, but I don’t see how that happens without adding a prospect to it.

the last 3 seasons Ender had 6.8 WAR.
Greg Allen has had -0.2.
i’d rather have the player who i think has the chance to produce a positive WAR.
besides, that’s not what you said. you said Allen was a cheaper Ender. that is not true in any way.

He cashed out just as quickly as he cashed in. He got Tatis and Paddack on his sell off and that made up for everything he gave up.

Why not?

They aren't the best team in the NL. They'd have to win four rounds of playoffs to win the World Series. I still wouldn't trust their pitching at all.

Well, no, they're not, but the Dodgers haven't produced a WS title despite being perennially in that discussion. You have to try. The Pads are trying. They were #2 in run diff in the NL before the deals, now they're clearly better. Short series, they could absolutely win the pennant/WS with a couple pitchers getting hot.

Less likely for us, counting on Robbie Erlin and Tommy Milone taking us to the promised land. And while maybe everything going wrong wasn't predictable, there were enough question marks that you had think making a strong move for an established starter was in the club's best interest. So now we have to pay a deadline day premium or settle for nothing at all.
