The Coronavirus, not the beer

discuss and debate: now that we know that an effective vaccine is just a few months away, the case for taking strong and yes economically costly measures to delay deaths becomes more compelling

Utah governor declares emergency, issues mask mandate: "We cannot afford to debate this issue."

seems like a no brainer, everyone will get their "freedom" back in a few months...until then consider making some sacrifices for the common good

Or you just prioritize the vaccine to the small subset of the population that is susceptible and let us all live out only life the way we want.

I have no idea how effective/ineffective masks are dealing with the spread; but when things are spiraling out of control, I understand saying use them.

socialism...non?

shouldn't we be relying on free markets and individual responsibility to take care of this

Operation warp speed.

Looks like trump did something good I guess.

Maybe the world can now stop with their insanity and finally blame China for the virus and figure out it’s origins.

i give some credit to very poorly chosen one there...from everything i've read Operation Warp Speed has been well run by some very capable people

but in the interests of fairness and balance i have to ask...why couldn't the rest of our federal government response to covid-19 be similarly smart and efficient...it didn't have to be so shambolic...mask wearing did not have to become an ideological litmus test...HCQ and bleach did not have to become objects of debate and derision

There was no effective response to a hyper contagious disease. The economic damages of the lockdowns far exceeded the loss of life from the virus. This is not just a fringe idea anymore and you know it.

This was not trumps fault. This was not marcons fault. Heck, even with some bad nursing home policies it’s not even cuomos fault.

The whole of the blame rests with the CCP and it’s a shame that politics got in the way of the obvious.

not sure what this is about...but we really do need to come together and figure out the best way to get people vaccinated

Before we start praising warp speed for this, the Pfizer vaccine development had nothing to do with warp speed.

Pfizer head of vaccine development Dr. Kathrin Jansen told the NY Times: “We were never part of the Warp Speed ... We have never taken any money from the U.S. government, or from anyone.”

Yet here is Pence, basically taking credit for the whole thing:
"HUGE NEWS: Thanks to the public-private partnership forged by President @realDonaldTrump, @pfizer announced its Coronavirus Vaccine trial is EFFECTIVE, preventing infection in 90% of its volunteers."

from the NY Times article:

The news comes just days after Joseph R. Biden Jr. clinched a victory over President Trump in the presidential election. Mr. Trump had repeatedly hinted a vaccine would be ready before Election Day, Nov. 3. This fall, Pfizer’s chief executive, Dr. Albert Bourla, frequently claimed that the company could have a “readout” by October, something that did not come to pass.

Operation Warp Speed, the federal effort to rush a vaccine to market, has promised Pfizer $1.95 billion to deliver 100 million doses to the federal government, which will be given to Americans free of charge. But Dr. Jansen sought to distance the company from Operation Warp Speed and presidential politics, noting that the company — unlike the other vaccine front-runners — did not take any federal money to help pay for research and development.

“We were never part of the Warp Speed,” she said. “We have never taken any money from the U.S. government, or from anyone.”

She said she learned of the results from the outside panel of experts shortly after 1 p.m. on Sunday, and that the timing was not influenced by the election. “We have always said that science is driving how we conduct ourselves — no politics,” she said.

The data released by Pfizer Monday was delivered in a news release, not a peer-reviewed medical journal. It is not conclusive evidence that the vaccine is safe and effective, and the initial finding of more than 90 percent efficacy could change as the trial goes on. “We need to see the actual data, and we’re going to need longer-term results,” said Jesse Goodman, a professor of medicine and infectious diseases at Georgetown University.

Still, scientists were stunned by the data so far.

“This is really a spectacular number,” said Akiko Iwasaki, an immunologist at Yale University. “I wasn’t expecting it to be this high. I was preparing myself for something like 55 percent.”

Maybe you should take it up with their head of vaccine development then, because she says they are not a part of the program.

I’m sure there is a massive rush to ensure the population doesn’t think this had anything to do with the trump admin. But like everything the last 4 years we are the living embodiment of a Rorschach test.
