Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

Sources tell me that there are still moving parts in @Cubs - @Padres deal involving Yu Darvish. But I’m told Zach Davies plus several prospects are in deal going to Chicago, including 2020 2nd-rd @MLBDraft pick Owen Caissie.

Strange return for the Cubs, at least as reported so far: one guy two years from FA, plus a bunch of far-off high-upside lottery-ticket types. I get going after the latter, given the state of their system; but the near-term value of Davies doesn’t seem to do much for them, initiating tear-down mode, unless maybe they flip him subsequently.

If reported, thats not a great return from the Cubs. But Darvish owed 60 million so his contract unfortunately hurts his value.

Cubs-Padres deal will be Yu Darvish and Victor Caratini to SD for Zach Davies, SS Reginald Preciado, OF Owen Caissie, OF Ismael Mena and SS Yeison Santana, per source.

Darvish 34 years old I dont think that is a good trade for the Padres. Adding Snell they should try to get Bauer instead of Darvish. Maybe work a trade for Contreras.

The Braves have won 3 straight division titles and took the world champion Dodgers to game 7 of the NLCS after sweeping the Reds and Marlins.

This notion that the Braves aren’t currently an elite organization couldn’t be further from the truth.

Once again, the team making a splash in the offseason will be overrated.

I’m not saying the Braves aren’t an elite organization.
We are.
I said AA has been great and he has set us up to have a long window to contend.
I’m simply saying it’s ok to say the Padres are having a great offseason and although they will probably not be in as great as a position as the Braves in 5 years to contend, they are right with us in the next few seasons and if they were to go to the WS in that time frame the GM should get credit.
No argument the Braves should be proud of what they’ve accomplished.

Cubs rotation is wrecked. Wonder if they go full rebuild or if they try to patch it together.

The central is pretty weak overall so they can still compete.

With Darvish and Schwarber off their books they could conceivably play on TWO of the Odorizzi/Paxton/etc. second tier level of arms and JBJ in CF. That wouldn’t exactly make them one of the top contenders, but like you said the Central is weak. If Bryant, Baez, Rizzo, and Contreras have good years and Heyward and Happ keep hitting they’d probably be competitive in that division.

True they could sign two pitchers however their stated goal is to cut payroll. So I don’t see them spending much of their saved money

Some people seem to be confused about the value of a 34 year old SP still owed $60M.

The Padres are floating right down the creek of a 2-3 year window of contention that ends in a massive tear down and rebuild. We’ve literally seen this story play out in SD before when Preller first showed up. I hope finishing 2nd behind the Dodgers for a couple seasons is worth it.

I’m sure Padres fans are excited right now, so good for them. That WC flag will fly forever, and they can stare at it a few years from now when that’s all they have to remember.

I like the trade for the Cubbies. I honestly think Davies straight up for Darvish isn't a bad trade considering the age and money difference. I get that Darvish was amazing this year, but he's 33. I just don't see how he had that much value at his salary.

The rest of the prospects are gravy. Solid chance at least 1 of those guys turns into an impactful mlb player.

The more I thought about it, I don't think this deal is that bad at all for the Cubs. The prospects they received may be a ways away, but it serves them on a couple of levels. Their farm system was depleted by all the "flags fly forever" trades they made a few years back so they've re-stocked to some extent. At the same time, some of the prospect capital can be flipped for guys who could help the big league club and are less expensive than what they've had. Cubs could do a fairly quick re-tool.

Disagree. The Pads added a good one and good two with 3 years of control each. To do so they only traded one of their top 8 prospects. They lost one, top 100 guy and a 2-3 Win starter.

This is not an all in move. They still have a ton of ammo and/or cost controlled players in those 7 top 100 prospects they did not trade.

Yes, Yu's 34, 35, 36 yo seasons are risky. But it's not a ton of money, especially when you are paying Tatis and others peanuts.

If we go back to regular playoffs, I think the we have to win the division. I don't see the WC coming out of the east with the Pads/Dodgers in a much worse division than the East.

I'd rather doubt that's the way they go either - just pointing out the fact that they could become a much better team that way. They're not going to get the type of haul they'd like for Bryant or Baez, so it would probably be worth a shot if they're not broke - they might even be better off from a rebuilding perspective if they offered QOs to Bryant and Baez and got compensation picks for them. Management would arguably save a little face with fans since they could say "we tried to keep them" instead of trading one or both. If the Reds do have to move one or two of their important pieces, their only competition in the Central would be the Cards. There's little doubt they'd probably be a better team than in 2020 with moves like that, and their payroll wouldn't have increased. MUCH better defensively, their rotation would be worlds deeper (Hendricks/Odorizzi/Paxton/Davies would be really solid if healthy), and they could use Alzolay and Marquez in the pen.

Like most, I fully expect them to move Bryant as well (although fans will be disappointed with the return).
