Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

That's 3/7/14 per Pipeline plus Mejia. Thought Snell was signed for longer, just 3 years.

Blake Snell to the Padres.

Luis Patiño, Francisco Mejía, Blake Hunt and Cole Wilcox would head to Tampa.

A couple of prospects that are a ways away, but three of the Padres top 15 prospects and a major league catcher that was once viewed as the next big thing. Patino is right there and I will be curious to see if Mejia can get back on track.

I've pretty much just quit following prospects. Which one of those are considered can't misses?

Patino is the highest rated, but he's a pitcher, so he falls under the same risk all pitchers do. He's dominated at every stop in the minors and he's only 21. TOR potential.

Meija came over from Cleveland in the Brad Hand deal. He was at one point been considered the best catching prospects in all of baseball, but questions about his defense continue to rise and he isn't good enough offensively to be a standout player at 1b. He's still young enough to figure it out, but the shine has definitely faded here.

Blake Hunt is a catching prospect who is similar in value to Langeliers. Both are regarded as very good defensive catchers with nice on base skills and roughly average power. Both are rated as 45 FV catchers by fangraphs.

Wilcox is a pitcher that was just drafted in the 3rd round of this year's draft so there isn't much info available other than his pre-draft scouting report. But he was considered a 1st round talent. Signed for 3.3 million, so he was pretty well regarded.

I'd think a similar trade from us would be something like Anderson, Riley, Langeliers, and our 2020 1st round round pick. Pretty rich trade. If Soroka hadn't gotten injured, I'd probably be more willing to sell high on Anderson in such a trade given his likely ceiling, even though hitting is more of a need. But if we were to give up this much value in a trade, I'd want it to be for a hitter like Jose Ramirez or Matt Chapman.

Anderson is pretty much untouchable for me barring a superstar with 5+ years of control coming back. He looked WAY better than anyone thought. Wouldnt move him for Chapman or Ramirez either. Anderson isnt arb-eligible til 2024.

Anderson is a nice pitcher, but don't confuse him as an ace. It's far more likely he is a 2-3 WAR pitcher. And he has the typical risk all pitchers have. If we could get an elite position player under control for 3 years or more for a package centered mostly on Anderson, we should 100% take it. Ramirez and Chapman are those type of players.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that outfielder Kevin Kiermaier is "next on the trade block" for the Rays.
Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times previously mentioned Kiermaier as a trade candidate and the possibility seems more likely than ever now that the club has reportedly reached a deal to send Blake Snell to the Padres. The 30-year-old is owed $11.5 million in 2021, $12 million in 2022 and $13 million (or a $2.5 million buyout) in 2023, so the Rays would surely like to have some additional flexibility with their payroll. The three-time Gold Glove Award winner hit just .217/.321/.362 with three homers over 49 games this past season, but his defense in center field remains top-notch and he offers excellent speed on the basepaths.

Finding a taker for Kiermaier is going to be really tough without attaching him to someone else. His defense is still elite, sure, but he's a more expensive Inciarte with a little more pop and he's going to lose a step like Ender has at some point. Who's trading for Ender right now making significantly less money?

Sending off an impact player with 3 years of affordable control remaining is not how the Rays usually operate. They usually send them off with under 2 years of control remaining, so this move seems to be caused by financial losses of 2020.

Can anyone put together the equivalent Braves package?

I see Kiermaier as basically Andrelton Simmons playing CF. SS is a more valuable position, but both these guys appear to have almost all their value on defense. I'm really curious as to see what Simmons' market will be. He's another guy whose market could hinge on the DH decision as there are a couple of NL teams with a SS need but may be wary of Simmons' bat at this point.

Something like Anderson, Riley, Langeliers, and Muller?
